Leftovers

We'll I lucked out and picked up a leftover buck tag for my girlfriend in units 27 and 181 for the 3rd season. Last year we hunted the 4th season in unit 37, so we won't be too far from that. I'm hoping to be able to head up that way for at least a weekend or two before the season starts. Other than the obvious (lots of hunters), does anyone have any other info. It looks like the majority of 181 is sage brush, with the upper corner being some timber. I'm assuming if the deer are being pushed hard and there isn't much snow they'll be trying to hide out in the timbers and escaping through draws to private ranches.

Hunted 27/181 3rd season back

Hunted 27/181 3rd season back in 2011 with left overs too. Had never hunted it before but since I just go home from Iraq it was the best tags we could still get.  Between 3 of us we saw one doe the whole time and that was in 27 near Gore Pass. Saw more moose than elk and deer combined. Snow was deep that year and you could tell there were a lot of folks thru the area during 2nd season. We worked 181 down in the sage flats pretty hard hoping they moved there from the deep snow but saw nothing (but antelope) after all day glassing. The northern area of 181 was packed with hunters up in the Chimminey Rock area. Don't want to bust your bubble but that was how it was that year. Hope you have better luck this year.

Thanks for the info SGM.

Thanks for the info SGM. Looks like we won't head up into the northern part of the unit then unless we're absolutely forced to. I'm mostly just looking to provide a good experience for my girlfriend to keep her interested in hunting for another year!
