Leadville area advise

Hello everyone,
My name is Dave and I am from Pa. I am new to this site and I would appreciate any and all advise on the Leadville area, on elk hunting. I have friends in the area now and have been offered the chance to come and stay at their place if I want to come out and hunt. Unfortunately they are not hunters and have no real personal advise on best hunt units and driving distances etc, etc, etc. I see they are on the border of units 48 & 49 and they are both draw areas. I hunt primarly archery but would consider rifle if the chance opened up. Could anyone advise on the best way to apply and the best archery/rifle options. I received the Colorado Big Game Brochure and have that info but am unsure about the best or most realistic way to apply, for someone without any PP's. If unsucessful in the draw what are the chances of OTC sales? It will be me and possibly a buddy hunting on our own.
All help appreciated

We're hoping to draw tags near Buena Vista this year as well. I know the units near Gunnison have OTC sales, but I'm not sure about the areas closer to Leadville.

I talked to the DOW yesterday and they said they all are going in the first round pretty much. 49 needed 5 PP and 48 and 481 went to some w/o PP's or with 1 PP. I checked last years stats and it seems like the only ones they had leftover were private landowner tags. I'm thinking that the leftover lottery and second rifle are probably the only way I'll get tags this year. I forgot to ask the DOW what they use to determine why some areas are Unlimited, OTC, Draw or what? Herd size I imagine.

We're planning to apply for 481 as a second choice I believe in the 2nd season. We're all going for cow tags since this will be our first elk hunt. We may put 48 as a second or third we haven't decided yet. I spent quite a bit of time in 48 a couple of years ago hiking and fishing. I didn't see any elk unfortunately, but I think it's a good area anyway.

hunter from unit 49

I have personally been hunting unit 49 for around 5 years for elk
We have seen lots of elk, but sorry I will not give away my hunting area I am sure you understand, the odds of you drawing a tag for archery are very slim im talking 5 prefernce points, for second rifle a bull will run around 5 as well a cow around 3. Your best bet is to go to unit's further west where u can get an OTC for either archery or rifle I may suggest gunnison and or specifically Woods Lake near Ouray colorado i believe is in unit 71 the country is rough good for bowhunting and low hunting pressure
