Late Season Cow Elk on the Bosque del Oso CO

I threw in a late season cow elk tag as a 2nd choice in the draw for the Bosque and with some dumb luck I drew it. Its Dec 20-28.  i have seen some other posts that the Bosque is a bull wintering area and cows are hard to come by.  I was wondering if anyone has done the late season hunt and may have a pointer or two to steer me in the right direction.  I have driven around the Bosque several times and it all looks the same.  Just hoping to have some elks steaks for Xmas.  Any help is appreciated.

Welcome to the forum.  There

Welcome to the forum.  There are a couple of members here that have hunted for bulls in that area but I don't know of anyone that has had a cow tag.  I would start by calling a hunt planer at the Parks and Wildlife Offices at 303-291-7526 and see what they have to say about it.  You could also call the local CPW office in Pueblo and find out who the local biologest is and talk to them to see what you can find out.  I am sure that they would be quite helpful to you.

Good luck on your hunt.

I hunted in BDO in 2009

I hunted in BDO in 2009 during the same hunt. I seen probably 5 bulls for every cow. I shot mine the 2nd morning up towards the southern border along the private, in the area if gallesos canyon. It was really warm that year up in 60's both days.

Bosque Cow hunt

The only place I saw a cow was near the Northern Camp area while I was there 3rd season Bull hunting. I was told Cherry Canyon is generally the best Cow spot although I did not see one there. They show up later then when I was hunting generally. Plenty of Water up most of the Canyons. Gallegos, Alamosito, Cirello, Apache are all great looking Canyons. After you shoot your elk, you can drive close to it using the oil roads between 10a.m. and 2p.m. If Lion season is open get a tag.

Thanks for all of the help

Thanks for all of the help and ideas.  Planning to visit there in the next couple of weeks just to get a lay of the land as I realize the elk won't be there yet.  I may take your advice Bleu and get a tag for a cat.  I knew there were plenty of bears in there (although in late December they will probably be sleeping) but hadn't thought about the cats.  I know Bob Holder fairly well as I have seen him alot up at the Spanish Peaks SWA so I planned to give him a call.

BOD

Thanks to all for the information here. I also drew a Bull tag for 3rd season and am looking for good information as well. I know there are some special maps available to show the area. Will call DOW this week, and scout end of this month and in Sept. Any and all info is appreciated.

Many Thanks, Bill
