Last "Rifle" hunt of the year

Yesterday was my last day to get out for the D-16 (General-rifle) season, and I was debating between a highly frequented public place near our local mountains, or a place down where I used to work but hadn't been to much lately.

I don't like crowds, and talking with a fellow hunter (Gatorfan), he said "Why not go with the bow?". I hadn't thought about that. I guess I could kill one at 10 times the distance with a rifle, but have to compete with 100 other yahoos doing the same. Or, I could go to our local archery only spot, and try my luck. Those deer haven't been pressured too much in a month or so. Plus, i knew there were turkeys there, and I could always try to stick one of them. However, considering I have never shot any animal with a bow, this would be a ballsy move.

So I went up to the hill and got out of the truck and heard the turkeys right away on the roost. I went to the same place where some darn Tom has busted me the last 2 springs, when I walked underneath his roost both times. This time, I circled around, but not far enough, as I popped over the ridge only about 40 yards from the tree. 2 of them flew out, and a few more stayed behind, cackling up a storm. I backed off to the top of the ridge, where there was also some decent deer sign. I set up on that trail, only 100 yards from the turkeys. Waited an hour or so, the turkeys went the other way, and I didn't see a deer. Stalked around for 3 hours or so to no avail.

I did drive around for a few minutes when I left, and saw a doe right near another friends stand. I parked and circled around behind her to see if there was a buck with her. There wasn't, so I took off. On a side note, I only saw one other truck on the entire mountain.

Fun day in the woods, none the less. I will be back up there in a week or 2 with the bow. Also, I am gonna nail that son of a #%$@ Tom this spring if it's the last thing I do. I found his track about 100 yards from the tree later in the morning, and from tip to tip of his toes, it's as wide as my thumb tip to pinky tip on my hand. @^$#%^!!!!!

Sounds like the old adage, a bad day at hunting beats a good day at work.  sounds like you had a good day.  Our rifle season doesn't start until the first week in dec.  Still bow season here.  I will go out tomorrow morning.  I am ready to take a doe to fill the freezer.

Go!!

Go get em CA-V!

Best of luck - sounds like that Tom is jerking your chain, for sure.

Shoot him (if he is in season - we dot have a fall season for turkeys) and then shoot a big old buck.

Might as well make it a two-fer!

Keep us updated on what you see or harvest!!

Jim

You know that the season

You know that the season doesn't end until Sunday, right?

Also, there's no time restriction on the fall birds like there is during the spring hunt.  You know where they roost, why not get back up there for an evening hunt and intercept them on their way back to the tree?

Who knows?  You might just have a deer ruin your turkey hunt!

I'll be back at it Saturday morning with the little man and Sunday if we nee it.  I wish he had already filled a tag so I could be chasing them with my bow!

I hadn't actually thought

I hadn't actually thought about that, the evening thing.  I could go back there, maybe the day after thanksgiving.  Can't make it out till then.  And, it'll be A-22 season again, so i can shoot a buck or a doe.

What good advice.  I knew I had been picking your brain for a reason.... lol
