One of my buddies is going to be doing some temporary work in Palmer from July to September. His company has given him a house and car for the time he is there. I have always wanted a chance to go to Alaska, so I have decided to take a few weeks off work this summer to visit him.
I plan to use his house as a base, and take a few trips from there. I would like to go on one hunt while I am up there, probably lasting 5-7 days. I have considered carribou, moose, Sitka deer and black bear as possible species as I have missed the draw and will need OTC tags. I am a very experienced outdoorsman and have done many backcountry trips in the past. I have all the needed gear, but will be limited on transportation. I will have access to a SUV, but no ATVs/Boats... etc. I don't mind driving a far distance or doing a lot of hiking, but this hunt will primarily need to be accessible from a road. I am trying to do the hunt for a reasonable cost, and cannot really afford a guided hunt. I would consider a transporter (either plane, boat, atv...) if they can be found for a reasonable price - maybe under $2500 round trip. It seems like a lot of these services are already booked, as people usually plan trips like this WAY in advance. Does anyone have any experience with this type of service? Any recommendations?
Really, I am just looking for a great adventure. The species doesn't really matter as much as the experience. I am OK working hard, as long as there is a reasonable chance of success. Any guidance is really appreciated.
Also, I would like to do some fishing while I am there. I currently live in FL and mainly fish saltwater, but grew up fishing for trout. I fish all styles - spin, bait, fly. ANy recommendations on DIY fishing opportunities. Again, I am OK with travel and hiking. I would prefer not to be shoulder to shoulder, fighting other anglers. Trout or salmon preferred.
