Last day of the season is here

Today is the close of New York state's rabbit and squirrel season among others.

Here's a link to where you can find the season dates:

I hope you all had successful and safe seasons!

Mike

Ah, I miss rabbit hunting in

Ah, I miss rabbit hunting in the northeast. It was one of my favorite things growing up.

How's the rabbit hunting in your part of the state Mike?  I saw some guys on another site talking about most of New England having decreasing numbers of the critters, almost to the point that in New hampshire (I think), they said they might totally end the seasons for them.

Too bad, cause alot of young kids get started on rabbit hunting up there.

Out here, they are like rats, they are so plentiful.  I would run over 3 or 4 a night (not on purpose) when woeking midnights years ago, and would see 10 times that.

I might give it a try here, since I loved doing it back east, and I absolutely LOVE eating them.

Sean you are blessed again.  Abundant game populations are something I earnestly hope for.  In the road is about the only place I see rabbits but I don’t hunt them hard.  Rabbit populations are cyclical (at least here).  We have a boom of rabbit population growth then coyotes move in and have a litter the following spring.  That year almost all of the rabbits get eaten.  The following year, the hungry coyotes move away.  Then the rabbits that are left have litters and in the fourth year there are lots of rabbits again.

Well, I wouldn't say that

Well, I wouldn't say that game is "abundant" here.  Coyotes and rabbits are, and the dove and quail huntingis hard to beat.

However, I could use a few more deer, elk, and bear.  But, I can't be too picky, right? Wink

Sadly I have to report that I

Sadly I have to report that I didn't get out a single time for rabits this year. I only saw a couple while I was deer hunting in an area where I used to see over a dozen a day.

Next year will be better for sure.

My son has wrecked havoc on squirrels this year.  I gave him the green light on them after a squirrel had a litter in my attic.  He has decimated the population within sight of the house, but the rabbits have been safe from us this year too.
