Keep your children safe

In light of the tragic accident allover the news today where a 4 year-old found a .45 cal handgun and shot and killed his 5 year-old sister and wounded another child, I felt it my duty to pass on this site. My neighbor owns this and although I dont own a hand gun I think that those of us that do owe it to our little loved ones to atleast check this out. These seem to be a really excellent choice and still retain the protection that an unlocked hand gun affords in an emergency situation. http://www.safetybullet.com/

sad Hi there, that's terrible to hear. I have always believed that the parents of children should be held completely responsible for children that get ahold of guns and bad things happen. I also believe that children should be taught about firearms as soon as possible. I started teaching my kids at the age of 3. I have had no problems, Yet, they are now teenagers and 1 is 7. There is also an organization called Project Child Safe that gives away free gun locks.

According to the manufacturer here, there is a primer activated aluminum ram rod that is activated by a standard primer when the hammer falls on the device that is chambered in the firearm. The ram rod passes thru a plastic sleeve that expands and lodges itself inside the barrel of the weapon making the firearm useless until the saftey device is removed with the provided tool.

The theroy here is that all you have to do is eject the device and the weapon is ready to fire, no locks to unlock and clips/speedloaders to have to find and insert in order to make hasty use of the firearm yet retaining the safety of the weapon in the event it is found by children or taken from you by an assailant .

something interesting i had been told about accidental shootings involving young children. in talking to a couple firearms instructors, i was told that a lot of young children who accidentally shoot themselves do so because they first try to pull the trigger in the conventional manner with the barrel pointed away. because their fingers are either too short or too weak to pull the trigger, they turn the gun around and use their thumbs, which are much stronger and much easier to get into the trigger guard. obviously, with the barrel pointed towards them now, they end up shooting themselves instead of shooting away from themself. never really gave it much thought before, but makes a lot of sense.

It's also important to teach your children about the dangers of guns even if you don't own one. Half the homes in this county have guns and if your child goes to that home to play with their friends, there's a good chance one will be present.

This is one of those things that really get's my blood boiling. A child should never ever be able to get his/her hands on a loaded gun or any gun in that situation. As far as I'm concerned, the owner (or person responsible for the gun) is the person who killed the child. It's sort of like letting your kid play in the street or play on a frozen pond. The child has a good chance of getting run over by a car or falling through the ice - its very simple. Once again, guns don't kill - people do - and the owner of the gun did the killing...
