Hello this is my first post on this forum, and i need a little help. I am from sw PA and I am trying to put together a kansas bow hunt. Now i have only ever passed through so i dont now the terrain. I am wanting to get a tag and try to hunt succesfully on my own unguided. The questions are, what part of kansas should i go, i know it all has big dear but i am asking where are the trees!? Where is there areas with alot of public land to hunt? Can i expect to be successful on public land? Are there alot of big deer public land? Thanks in advance for any help
Welcome jayson ![]()
I live in NE KS so i'm partial to this area. Personally have never hunted any public land, but hear it is not so bad. Lots of good looking WIHA in the state. More trees in eastern 1/3 of state. Good luck and keep up the research.
Hey man,
I'm new to the forum also.
I am in Cowley County which is the approximately 15 miles east of I-35 at the Ks/Ok state line.
I have traveled every inch of the county, most of the region, and a lot of the state in my job.
Cowley County has one of the larger and best public deer hunting areas. It is the Kaw Wildlife Management Area southeast of Arkansas City. I have gained landowner permission to cross in to KWMA to an area that is about 3-4 miles from the nearest public access.
If interested, let me know.
And, if you want to see an example of the deer in the region, JPOutfitters just finished a hunt 30 miles east and cashed in nicely. He has pics of the deer posted around the forum.
Good luck,
Joe

Hey JP,
Thanks.
Joe
NICE buck bud. Sorry for the late post back been super busy with work and life. Thanks for the repsonses
Welcome to the club, I guide 3 guys from PA last year and we had a blast. Harvested 3 bucks in 4 days. The WIHA gets hit pretty hard but if you hunt it during the week it's not that bad. During Nov. it looks like a part every day though. We have good luck in Oct.

To help you out stay on the EAST side of KS. The south part of Unit 10 just opened up around 1500 acres of WIHA. I hunted it in the past before it was WIHA. River bottom with strips of timber right beside the river. Really good spot.
Hey Jayson, you from the Washington area, just south of P-burgh????
I think KS could do a better job with the descriptions for the WIHA's. As a resident, I sometimes have a hard time finding it. I haven't looked at the maps this year, but last year they didn't have GPS coordinates which would make it easier to located the land.
