Just saying Hi

I'm new here and just wanted to say hi.  I've been reading thru some posts for the last couple weeks and figured I better just join in.

A little about me.  I'm almost 45, been a bowhunter since 1982, and really only a bowhunter at heart.  I'm a machinist by trade, a father, grandfather, husband, and all around normal guy.  I've been hunting whitetails my whole life and decided I really need to start hunting elk before I just can't do it.

My brother and I are planning a Diy backpack hunt to Colorado for the first 10 or 12 days of the season.  Neither of us have done this or hunted elk before.  I've been looking at the DOW site, this site, several others and Google earth for about a month now.  I have information overload :)  I don't want or expect anyone to hand out any spots or gps coordinates.  I will be asking alot of questions over the next few months I'm sure.  I am a planner, organizer, and over analyzer by nature.  We've both been working out already and going over our gear.

I don't expect it to be an easy hunt, nor do I want it to be.  I am looking forward to the challange of the hiking and hunting.  Looking forward to learning new things and the adventure.  Sure we'd both like to shoot a bull, but that would just be a bonus really on my first trip out.  I'll shoot a cow if one presents a shot also.  But mostly going to embrace the mountains and the time with my brother.

Can't wait to start chatting with you guys.

Matt

Just as a FYI for you.  If

Just as a FYI for you.  If you are looking at areas that take a draw be prepared not to draw the tag.  Most of these areas take a few points to draw.  If you are looking at a over the counter either sex tag put in for a preference point in the draw and then check the box for a archery tag if you don't draw.  All this will do is cost you the $3.00 application fee and you will have a point going into the next draw.

We are planning on an OTC

We are planning on an OTC unit, I know that we wouldn't draw a tag.  I am currently looking at a few different areas and gmu's.

I've been looking at gmu's 14 and 161

421 and 521

78 and 81

Not sure where we are going yet.  The wilderness area really intrigue me.  I've been looking at the Colorado DOW elk statistics, hunter atlas, and Google earth alot.  I need to read alot more and try and figure out an area to go to.  It's really hard being in Michigan and not getting boots on the ground until we get there.  This first year will be a big learning curve.

Hadn't thought about applying for a point though, that is a great idea.  Thanks.

I haven't hunted in any of

I haven't hunted in any of those units but I do know that a lot of hunters hit 421 and 521, both are good units with lots of public ground.

I would suggest that what ever unit you decide upon to stay moble.  If you don't see what you like in a couple of days of hunting move to a new spot.  That has always helped me when I hunted a new area.

I have seen that information

I have seen that information about 421 and 521 posted on several forums also.  Maybe I'll rule those out.  I'm not really sure what to look for on the topo maps and google earth to pick an area anyway.  I know how to read topos, use them all the time when hunting southern Ohio, but I don't know what elk like.  I've found several spots with north facing slopes, lots of timber, benches, openings and water.

For a pack in spike camp, how high would you guys suggest to camp?  I was thinking as high as I could with the possibility to glass some meadows and parks, but in the morning the thermals will be going down and make it hard to hunt until the air warms up.  Also not sure if we should camp high since we are flat landers and not use to the altitude.  Also when I find some elk, how far do you try and camp from them, 1/2 mile, 1 mile, really don't know how close to get without spooking them.

Sometimes when you are new to

Sometimes when you are new to a area more hunters will actually help you more than hurt.  A little bit of pressure will keep the animals moving.

As for altitude sickness it is a real thing.  But if you arrive a day ahead of scedule and take it easy along with drinking lots of water and very little achohol you should be alright.  But if you start having a headace and don't feel well get to a lower elevation.  You might even want to Google it and check out the symptoms.  I found out a number of years ago that even animals can get it and die quite quickly if their owners don't reconise the symptoms.

For scouting with Google Earth, I haven't had any luck with it either.  But then I am a boots on the ground type of person or like to at least drive around the area checking it out.  One thing about elk is that they are predictable.  They need water, feed, and a place to hide and bed down.  If you can find these kind of places and set up you odds increase quite a bit.  One thing that you might consider is the Colorado Division of Parks and Wildlife Elk Hunting University.  It has a lot of information in it for the first time elk hunter.  The CODPW also has a hunt planner that you can talk to over the phone for information on the areas that you might like to try out.  The number in on the web site.
