Re: This just makes me angry.... I hate poachers!!

The whole sad part about it is that the majority of non-hunters who read about this won't pay any attention to the last few sentences in the article. They will just assume that all hunters are as bad as these guys, as they have always assumed.

Several years ago when I was just out of college I was renting a small house in a relatively left wing liberal neighborhood. That was my mistake!! My buddy and I had returned during the night from a four day deer hunt and quitetly hung up my buck in the cold garage overnight with plans to skin it the next morning. I know my animal lover liberal nextdoor neighbors saw us bring the carcass into the garage because they were pulling in as we were working and I clearly saw a look of disgust on their faces. Next morning bright and early a cop rings my doorbell. When asked how I can help her, she said they had gotten a report of a possible poaching and needed to investigate. I explained that I have a tagged buck hung up in the garage if she cares to see it, then proceeded to lead her into the garage. I then explained to her that my next door neighbors are diehard animal lovers, very liberal, and I'm sure they hate hunters and they did observed us last night bringing in the deer. I told her that I'm assuming it was them who falsely reported this to the authrorities. After inspecting my tag and my ID and doing a bit of visual snooping all she said is "don't retaliate", she'd take care of this. I said "what makes you think I'd retaliate?" "Owing guns and being a hunter does not make me violent and unstable. I said nothing else, but began to wonder that if someone is the bias type to falsely report me for poaching then I wonder what else they might falsely report me for if I verbally offend them. So I left it alone. It's really sad the perception many modern urban people have against hunters and hunting. Poachers only reinforce this bad perception.

What really irritates me is how passive aggresive our country is becoming. People strap on their "victim/martyr" status and use that to dominate and control everyone around them. The really sick thing about it is by doing so, they often get the real victims' cooperation because nobody wants to be labeled as being insensitive. They disagree with hunting, so they complain about how your behavior horrifies them and you have to alter your activities to placate them. After all, you don't want to be perceived as being a bad representative of hunting, do you? So they use this tack to drive you underground by having you do the digging. This achieves three things for them: 1) it gets clean cut, responsible, hunters to stop being visible to the public; 2) it fosters the perception that there's something "dirty" going on that needs to be hidden; and 3) it allows the stereotype of hunters as ignorant, overweight, bigoted, unwashed, bloodthirsty rednecks to be presented unchallenged in the media.

Oh those passive/agressive neighbors didn't stop me. I brought home a couple more carcasses the next season before moving and made no attempt to hide my kill when bring it in the garage. I figured if they saw me then so be it and they did. I did steer clear of them though for the most part when I lived there as I didn't want to be accused of anything else I didn't do. Some people are just best avoided.

Poaching

Very sad. I think the only reasonable thing you can do is put a poacher in jail. However with massive budget cuts, over crowding in jails, is this really going to be an option? Taking away his license is not going to stop him from poaching. Handing him a hudge fine is like getting blood from a rock. Maybe 1000's of hours having to volunteer for F&G or DRN depending where you live and what they call it might be a better answer....
