Friday PM

Well today was not the day

Saw one deer

120 class eight point at 100 yards in heavy timber

It was the first day of the hunt and the shot was iffy so I passed on him

Sat thirteen hours on stand and saw no other deer

Pulled stand and will head for another area in the morning

Fairly strong south winds - gotta do some map stidying to figure out where to go

More later - tough day for sure - but this is what we live for!!!

Sorry, Jim. It sounds like

Sorry, Jim.

It sounds like you're having a tough go of it.

It's bad news when your seeing more people than deer.

Maybe you'll be in the right spot to intercept a buck in the morning. Good luck.

ECU No worries Brother Public

ECU

No worries Brother

Public land is tough, that is for sure

I may bowhunt up here again but I will not do the shotgun season again

In fact, I may just start applying in 2011 for Iowa and put off out of state hunt (at least on public land) until I get drawn for Iowa which I think takes about three years.

The other option would be to try another area - I chose this one at random and maybe I just chose a heavily hunted area

It is what it is and I do not regret for a moment coming up here!

I bet it's tougher where

I bet it's tougher where you're at because the season is so short, than say, the south where we have the extended season. With the short season, everybody and their brother will be in the woods. That's when accidents happen.

Too bad there isn't anyone on here from Ill that can give you a heads up on other places that are less crowded.

I didn't think it took 3 years to get drawn for an Iowa bow tag or are you talking about shotgun hunting?

Tomorrow's your day. Knock a big 'un down.

Morning guys Thanks for the

Morning guys

Thanks for the well wishes

On stand at 430 and I had about a 800 yard walk to get here.

Stand was not pre-positioned so I had to hump everything in

I have changed gears today

I am very close to camp - sitting in a small head of trees (eihteen feet up a hickory tree).

About 300 yards south of me is a cut corn field that I know is going to have hunters on it - at least early and late this afterrnoon

In front of me is a grown up CRP field that slopes down toward a dry creek bed

To my left - and I think I can see down into it a little bit (will know when the sun comes up) is a smaller creek bed that feeds into the other one.
West wind and I have some tinks out in front of me - the scent should be going down into the small bottom.

Anything over 120 gets no pass today.

I qm going to sit here and have a coffee and wait to see how much "sompany" (wearing orange) I get as daylight approaches

I saw a doe on the way in and got one up as I skirted a nillet field....so we will see

All I need to do is see two to beat yesterdays total!!!!

I am on it - about an hour now til the sun comes up

Nice to get on this morning

Nice to get on this morning an to find a report.  Like going hunting from the comfort of my house.  I had a late night at my daughters school so no hunting this morning for me.

ECU I am talking about bow

ECU

I am talking about bow hunting for Iowa - I think it takes about three years to gain enough points - what I am not sure about is what happens after you are drawn and hunt a year - not sure if you have to start all over again or not

My buddies went this year - I will check with them and see how that part works.

I do know this - Illinois issues 25000 out of state permits and Iowa only allows 6000 - that should say something about the pressure they allow on their land.

I am going to say that Iowa is my long range plan for the next great out of state bow hunt.

I have been on stand now for six hours and have seen one small buck...came to the tinks and smelled it for about two to three minutes and then wandered off

I am gonna try to catch a midday buck cruising and then figure out what to do for this afternoon - gotta get something alse going -this is not working so well!!!

Cold, cloudy and very windy today - heavy fog this morning

Much quieter today - lot less shots and have seen only one hunter about a quarter of a mile away.

I suspect that a lot of

I suspect that a lot of hunters go in at midday to eat lunch so you may have the woods to yourself for awhile.  Good luck.

Well in spite of my best

Well in spite of my best efforts - that did not work.

I sat from 430 am til 1230 pm and then moved to another area and sat from 200 pm til dark.

I saw one small buck and nothing this afternoon!!

That is some hard luck hunting, for sure!

But, you cannot get one on the couch - so there I sat.

The whole Illinois thing did not work out like I envisioned but how can you know unless you go?

I did find out one clear truth in two trips up here - I cannot hunt like I used to...my knees and hips are worn out from carrying stand / pack / bow-gun...I used to be able to do that day after day with no penalty but not anymore!!

I will work to find a way to streamline my gear on future hunts...or I am going to have to travel shorter distances - I have always had a traveling bone when hunting and I still have one in my mind but the body is not neccesarily in agreement!

I will assess the whole trip after I have had time to mull it over and then decide what a good plan for 2011 will be.
