It's an Addiction

My neighbor doesn't understand why I keep shooting ducks when I don't particularly like eating them (in fact, offer people as many as they'd like) ... It's an addiction.

Hehe! I have come to find that out more this year than last! I've gone deer hunting 4 times this year since season opened in late Nov, but i've been duck hunting too many times to count.

I have come to learn as well that the taxidermists like ducks! And otters and other critters. We take the ducks that we dont want to eat and give them to him, he in turns gives us a small break on our taxidermy tabs and then mounts the duck and sells them, its a win-win situation.

I've been sick with a sinus infection this week so I took some nyquil and crashed last night, slept in and got up at 10 left for the creek at 12 and was back at the house by 2 with a drake and female woody.

Yeah, I know this sounds terrible - but I filled my deer tags as quickly as possible so that I could get back to the business of chasing quacks.

Even after 40 years I still love hunting mallards. Could care less if I ever shot another goose, but can't wait for when the northerns come in. Fortunately I live in the area they call the mallard capitol of North America. Big smile

In my opinion the mallard is the king of birds.

Yeah I love to see those mallards we dont have many on the back water creeks we hunt down here we're covered with woodies. After gettin used to jump shootin woodies at 35-45 yards those mallards look like Big ole 747's coming in for a landing!

I got out last week before the season ended here but only saw 2 flying and they were pretty high up. Usually the last week of the season there are ducks everywhere and so many geese that it's just incredible but on this hunt I only saw 3 singles and one small flock of 5 geese. Is it just too warm this year? Did the flocks ever migrate? I'm thinking that the ones I saw have been here awhile and knew that my position (on a WMA) was a place to stay away from.
I did have a chance at a duck but I couldn't identify it. Very pretty bird. It was under water when I walked up to the side of the river and popped up 30 yds from me. I watched it swim around and feed underwater for about 10 minutes and then left him because I didn't know what kind he was. I'll look it up in the id guide I posted the link for in the other thread.

This season has baffled me. I hammered ducks hard in October, waiting for the `really good' hunting from late November on. Late November came - it got cold, things froze, and the hunting tapered off to a fizzle, then, nothing. I went out today - zero, zilch, nada. Perhaps if we get some warm, wet weather, things will change and I'll get some shooting. Season ends here on the 19th (of Jan.). From what I can tell we had a bit of reverse climate change - and everything went farther south???? Don't know.

We are having an incredible year up here. Thumbs up The temps have even been in the mid 60's on occasion with very little snow and no lake freeze ups. The ducks are still here in numbers and the season ends in a couple of days. Evil! Brick Wall,)
