Interesting Deer Hunt

I had an interesting Friday evening hunt that I would like to share with you. I was set up in a nice location looking to shoot another doe off my place. I had a SE wind that was pushing my wind off the bean field and back into the trees. I had just got setup and had a young buck and a nice doe come in straight down wind of me and head out in the bean field. It started to get a little later in the evening and I was watching does in the beans but none was close enough to shoot. The wind had switched and was blowing out of the west very lightly but enough to push my scent out over the beans. My scent prevention was good as the deer still had no idea that I was there. Well the bugs started to come out so I fired up this Thermacell that I just purchased a couple days before. That's where the hunt ends. When that thing got warmed up two of the does popped their heads up and blew and cleared the field of deer completely. The deer were gone from the field for about 15 minutes and then they started to come back out a few at a time. A nice mature doe came out and walked right over to me as if to check if the scent she smelled was gone. It wasn't so she blew and cleared the field again. This same situation repeated itself a half dozen more times. The deer would clear the field for about 15 minutes then they would come back. I tried several times to leave but got interrupted by the deer re-entering the field. I would avoid the Thermacell. It didn't even work to boot. I just couldn't figure out why they kept coming back to check it out. Interesting to say the least.

Interesting Deer Hunt

Now that is very interesting to hear. For some reviews I have read said it had no effect on the deer scent wise and that is how they advertise too. Thanks for the heads up, but just curious if you smelled anything from the unit?

Interesting but I use one quite a bit.........

As far as working, it is in my opinion the bees knees. One thing I have found though is that it has to be on for at least 15 mins to get fully warmed up. I hunt deer and turkey in the creek bottoms of Florida and there have been several times that I thought the mosquitos were not going to be too bad so I did not fire it up. Got set up and they just about ate me alive before the therm-call warmed up. But after it did......not a bug one.

As far a smell. It does have a faint smell that I am sure the deer can smell but I have never had the reaction you had. Actually this last sat morn I had 2 does about 20 yds at my down wind that seemed oblivious to me.

I would give it another try and try the new earth scented pads. All I know is that up to this point I would not go into the early season woods without one.

Let us know how it turns out.

Good info Travis. Where does a guy get those pads from?

I definitely could smell it. This unit wasn't faint to me but I can smell everything. My girlfriend calls me the scent police. Big smile I take it pretty seriously. I'll try those other pads if I can find them.
