I'm looking at loads for the 338-06

Only the monster .30's can match those speeds for 220(5) grain bullets. Better to take advantage of what the 338 clan uses best.

Some day I might load another .7mm 195 grain bullet. I'll guarantee I can reach or exceed 2700 fps MV. I can't imagine what a hunter could use these on in this hemisphere.

Stick 3 or 4 in the ground around the camp perimeter to deter lightening strikes in camp.

"What's up, Doc". Err, Cap

Ever know anyone that has used one of those 7mm 195's.

The more I dink with the heavies at moderate velocity. The more I'm prefering it.

I believe they make a 300 grainer for the 338 cal.

I loaded exactly one. Chronographed it at 2600 fps MV. I tend to be a little shy of loading heavy bullets with stout doses of powder until I've had a chance to see how moderate loads work first. I believe it can be loaded to 2700, possibly 2800 fps in a 7mm Remington Magnum.

If they have a 300 grain bullet for .338, you should get a few and try them out in the 338-06.

If someone wanted to donate a few of the 300's. I'd run them down the barrel to see the results. I won't be buying a box. The 300's are probably pushing it, with perfomance, in a 33 cal. I would imagine that the 300grs has pushed the standard 338 barrel twist to it's max.

338-06

I have been shooting the 338-06 many years.

I suggest to keep your bullets 225gr or less to get the most from the 338-06.

For heavy game like elk the 225 Hornady SP is excellent team it up with Reloader 17 @ 63.0 to 63.5 using WW brass and Fed 210m primers for 2700 FPS. ( my new load)

my old load

52.0 of IMR 4320

210 Nosler Part.

same brass and primer

2650 fps

250gr

Due to limited powder space  in the 338-06 I recommend bullets no heavier than 225gr For best performance.  With Reloader 17 hand loaders can achieve 2700 FPS in 24" barrels with the 225gr bullets in the 338-06.  This performance is excellent that rivals the 338 Win Mag.

My favorite load is 63.0 of Reloader 17 with Hornady 225gr SP in the 338-06 Weatherby UL for 2700 FPS.
