AM hunt on day three Warmer

AM hunt on day three

Warmer today and supposed to warm all week which is very bad

70's during the day and mid 40's at night

Brutal

On stand at five am and the woods have been quiet as a tomb so for this morning - at least where I am they have been

Saw one little doe at eight am and other than that - nothing

Very few squirrels and birds even out

Wind picking up now

Gonna sit another hour or so and then do a quick scout here and at one more place

I think this is a better afternoon area - I fear I am chasing all the deer out of the field on my way in

I am going to see if I can move my stand further to the south and come in another way if I decide to hunt here again in the am

The hot chasing phase has not started yet

I may be a week or so early

Hope to see some bucks this afternoon

CA V I would pee my pants if

CA V

I would pee my pants if I even SAW a 180

I am holding out for a 125 though - at least I hope I can judge that well

It is very hot here - 75 today and the deer are pretty much shut down - but you never know....they are in the woods and so are the hunter - stranger things have happened

As for keeping the pace no one can catch cvc and hawkeye or at least I do not think they can

More updates to come!

Thanks

Jim

Brutally hot today 73

Brutally hot today

73 degrees thus afternoon

Ridiculous for November

Saw one doe this morning and watched a small seven pointer rub a tree this afternoon and then he passed within three yards of the stand... He knew I was there I think but was not smart enough to bolt (yet)

I am trying something new tomorrow

I put a ladder stand in the intersection of three big fields

There are very little woods there just some fencerows and ditches

This is not the way I am used to hunting...I hunt woods

This is true particularly for bow hunting but hey I will give it a try and see what happens

I am almost halfway through the hunt and have seen no big bucks so I will take a chance in the morning and see what I see!

I am brewing up some tarsal gland scent tonight and am going to try that out

Let's see what happens when they smell a SC deer!!!

Tuesday morning - still

Tuesday morning - still early

Going to stand at least an hour before daylight

I am going to go to the lqdder stand I put out yesterday in spite of the fact that it is in very little woods

That sort of goes against all of the bow hunting I have ever done + heck it goes against most of the rifle hunting I have ever done also!

I remain hopeful - we heard deer crashing through the corn field adjacent to the camp last night and I can only believe that it is a buck chasing does about

What size buck I cannot know but probably a buck

It is dreadfully warm out this morning - probably close to fifty degrees

No bucks of any size were seen yesterday - but you gotta keep plugging away

More later - time to get dressed, finish this java and head out

Wish me luck in these tough conditions!!!

Live from the Tree Update

This morning is a bust so far

I was in the stand a good hour before daylight and it was nice and quiet with little wind

I did not hear anything sneak through and have seen no deer so far

I will not blame it on the weather but will rather chalk it up to poor stand placement

The deer are here and they are not laying down only in one area

I just gotta figure out how to get on one

I am not going to dismiss this stand location yet either

I am going to make two or three mock scrapes with tarsal scent when I get down and see if some bucks take them over

I have a few areas to check out midday also

Going to try some soft rattling right now - soon as I have a hot coffee!!

More later!

Man what a brutal day

Man what a brutal day today

75 degrees in November

Most guys are shut down right now

I did not see a deer all day but I will admit I lost my concentration today

I was in the stand early and did not see anything through the early morning hours and then some other hunters moved into the area "moving a tree stand"....

I saw them coming and knew it was bad - but what are you gonna do when hunting public land!

It is what it is but my ladder stand placement of yesterday may have not been the great idea that I thought it was!!!

I pulled my climber from another area midday (the only area I have seen bucks) in what may be a risky move and am going to strike out into an unknown area before daylight in the morning

I HAVE to do something to tilt the odds in my favor....

I am also going to go scout another portion of the area that is Quality managed tomorrow...four points to the side (which suits me fine...I am not taking less than an eight point anyway) and see what I can fine

I am not desparate - nor am I gonna become - but I know I gotta work harder

My body is tired but my mind is clear

I did not anticipate the physical toll... My arms and stomach muscles are sore from the climber and my legs are tired from the walking

The message there is "get in better shape before an out of state hunt"!

I am working....

More later!

Live from the Tree - Wednesday

It is cloudy today - at least this morning it is...and may not be as hot today - not yet anyway

In spite of the fact that the forecast calls for clear skies - I am hoping this cloud cover will hold - anything to just change the weather somehow....

I got up at 330 am and did come to a new area with the climber this morning - had a hard time finding a suitable tree to climb in the darkness but once it got daylight I felt I was in a decent area

I saw one lone doe at 35 yards and passed on her - the shot was not perfect and that distance is a bit of a stretch for me...

Later, a cowhorn with twelve inch antlers came by - he was freaky looking - I guess you could call him a three pointer - he had one little extra point on one of the spikes. He passed by at seven yards and had the blackest legs I have ever seen.

Shortly after that I saw a decent buck (120 or so, I think) running across the CRP field with another deer in front of him... I thought it was him chasing a doe but am not so sure now....as a few moments later, five dogs passed by and they came from the general direction the deer did.

The dogs were not tracking them - they were on separate tracks but I wonder if that is not what caused the deer to bolt across the field...

Later I saw an unidentified deer easing through the timber at about 75 yards away but it did not look like an overly big deer.

At any rate - five seen so far this am...I am going to hold tight here for a little longer and see if anything else shakes out...this time of year, you never know.

I am in a small creek bottom and am going to move further down this same bottom this afternoon and pick a better tree.

End of Post

I kind of quit updating this during the week because of poor response.

I ended the hunt up poorly with few deer seen late in the week.

I hunted through Thursday and then drove home on Friday.

I am preparing now to return on Wednesday night / Thursday morning... I should be able to make a bow hunt on Thursday afternoon and then Friday though Sunday is a three day shotgun season.

I am a little nervous about such a concentrated season and the numbers of hunters I expect to see in the woods... and the weather forecast is not perfect - but my intent is to get in the stand early and stay there all day each day...even if I have to get down midday, stretch my legs and get right back up the tree.

The rut should have already broken loose by now but I have no reports from up there.

I will start a post for that hunt and see if anyone reads it!!
