illinois Chronicles - Bow Hunting Trip

Ok folks - here we go...

This is a week long trip from SC to IL for bowhunting.

I will chronicle the trip and hope for some good support and comments along the way.

I will do Live from the Tree updates for each hunt.

If I grow boresome or tiring, please say so.

Best regards

JimBob

I am not going to bother with

I am not going to bother with punctuation and capitalization with this post - it is too hard on the blackberry to get that done so please forgive

I left SC at 2 pm on Friday

Drove through sc nc and into tn

Westward all the way thru tn and then I cut north thru western ky and into illinois

Got to the cabin about 1 am est so I guess midnight here

24 degrees and bright as a bell tonight

Simply beautiful

Saw no deer on the way except for road kills

Am in cabin and squared away now

Small heater is maintaining 60 degrees so all is good

Almost 3 am my time now

I am going to try to sleep in

I am going to try to sleep in in the am but there are other hunters here and I am sure they will wake me when they leave which will be in about three hours

I am going to do a quick scout mid morning and decide where to hunt and try to get in the stand about one pm tomorrow

Cold now and warming early in the week

Rut should be on us, I pray my nerves are calm and my aim is true if a shot opp comes

I will take a mature doe and will try to judge and take only 125 class or better bucks

I have my scouting pack ready

I have my scouting pack ready and have also prepared my hunt pack

The bow and all accoutrements are ready

I scouted in early summer here so locating a hunting spot should not be hard

I have a climber and an 18 foot ladder to use

Should have brought a chain on and sticks

Lots of crooked trees here

Stoked now and finding it hard to wind down

Not afraid of the cold - not yet anyway

I am old and out of bowhunting for a long time - but I embrace the challenges

On stand day 1 First hunt I

On stand day 1

First hunt

I an below a cut corn field and sitting over a dry creek bed

Light north wind which is not perfect for me but it is what it is

There is a pear tree about 60 yards from me - out in the field that has two great scrapes under it

I can see green through the woods - looks like a winter wheat field about 100 yards from me

The leaves are very dry and I should hear them walking if they come through the hardwoods

I can see some of the corn field but not much

It is cool - about 40 degrees but not freezing

Shadows grow long now - about an hour and a half til dusk I think

I will update more later

Ok the first hunt was a bust

No deer seen

I have to go back to the same spot in the morning because I left the climber there

I will do a little scouting tommorrow in the early afternoon

I am going to take some food with me in the morning and try to stay in the stand until at least one pm

Some deer were seen today - there are six of us in camp - one guy took a doe this morning and one guy watched a desent eight pointer working scrapes this afternoon

I have a long week ahead just gotta be patient and try to get on one

Have been snakebit this year as far as deer hunting - gotta hope that improves!

Clear and cold - sunday

Clear and cold - sunday morning

That bed is killing my back - I gotta add my sleeping bag under me for a little more padding

There were some hunters about yesterday

I am thinking this afternoon they will taper off

I will hunt my same spot this am and try to identify a few different ares for varying wind directions

Think the wind today is supposed to be south which seems odd - sine it was north last night but I do not know the weather patterns here

Off we go!!!

Got on stand well before

Got on stand well before daylight

Had at least one pass by in the darkness and it may have been two

Two does came by about an hour after daylight - forty yards out and in thick cover

No shop opportunity

They worked into some crp behind the stand and caught me - not sure if they saw me or caught my scent...I believe the latter and at any rate they bolted

Saw an unidentified deer at 100 yards in the timber - walking the edge of a plowed field

Looked like a big deer but could gather no other details

I thought that field was in winter wheat but with the binos this am I can see it is plowed

Saw two does later in the morning feeding out in the corn field

They took off running and in a few moments some bird hunters with dogs worked the field passing within about 50 yards of my stand

They worked into the crp and I held fast hoping they would push one to me but no luck there

Had some chicken soup and a food bar just now - think I will go ahead and scout now

Climbing down from the tree and heading for the truck

Supposed to be warm this afternoon - about 60

More later

I have moved to a 145 acre

I have moved to a 145 acre tract of woods that I scouted in the summer

What was a crp field then is now a cut corn field

I am below the sw corner of the field...there is a pond in this corner of the field and I am sitting about 40 yards into the woods with the field and pond behind me

There are four very nice scrapes behind me - just inside the tree line

There are also several rubs in the area but not on real big trees

I can see at least 30 yards in every direction

I am a little exposed but this is the best tree I could find that will accept a climber

I will probably bring the ladder stand over here tomorrow

Got back on stand this afternoon about 12:45 so I have a good long sit this afternoon

Hunt em up folks - this is that time of year!!!

Ok tonight it got better! I

Ok tonight it got better!

I moved to a new location - I am about 40 yards inside a tree line off of a cut corn field - the field is about 30 acres and is inside a 140 acre block of timber - which is a big piece of woods in this area.

I had scouted this area in the summer and had a good feeling about it

As soon as I started walking the corn field I found numerous scrapes

I wanted to hunt the western edge but when I walked into the woods I immediately found two ladder stands

Bad news - this area is being hunted...so I backed out and made a new plan

I knew there was a pond on the other end of the corn field but it was already midday so I did not scout it out

I went back to camp and showered - I had worked up a sweat scouting and returned to the area at 1230 pm....I just took my stand and bow and struck out for the other end of the field

As soon as I went into the tree line there were three very nice scrapes and several trees rubbed up - but no big trees.

I moved in about forty yards and shimmied up a tree...at about one pm - spending the afternoon with little happening

At 430 a doe came up angling toward the field

She presented a good 30 yard broadside shot but I decided to pass

About 30 minutes later a four pointer came up from the deeper part of the woods and started chasing around a doe by the field edge that I had not even seen

Grunting pretty good, they both went out into the field

Later a six pointer came by and also went out into the field...

So - 2 does and 2 bucks - all within bow range of the stand

I just need a big boy to do that now

I have decided...I will take a doe but only in the morning

I do not want to ruin an afternoon hunt looking for a downed doe

More news tomorrow - tired now and ready for bed
