Idaho unit 48

Hello, I'm new to the site and new to archery hunting. I'm going out for 10 days in about a week.
Has anyone done an archery hunt in unit 48 in Idaho (Smoky Mtn. Zone)? Any suggestions on where to go in the unit and if you had success? I scouted for a few days in August with limited success. Saw a nice bull, but it's been a few weeks now. I can hike all day and am planning on spike camps for a week or so. Any suggestions would be great.
Thanks!

Hello Mattic,
My son and I are going to Unit 48 this year and I was wondering how you made out. We hunted the Challis area 2 years ago and my sons took 2 cows with the bow. The biologist in that area said the numbers are down this year so we're looking to go somewhere else. Thanks for the reply. PaLuke

Re: Idaho unit 48

I got into elk 6 out of 7 days and didn't see any wolves or wolf tracks, which i was surprised. I did hunt the same territory for the spike hunt in November and saw 2 wolves however. I never saw any other hunters during the bow season. I packed in pretty deep and spike camped for the week. There is plenty of springs and creeks to get water daily so no worries there. Biggest elk i saw was a huge herd bull 6X7 that was w/ 9 cows. Couldn't get him but hunted him twice. After that a few 5X5's that I couldn't get into range. It was my first time w/a bow and i just figured seeing elk daily, getting them almost into shooting distance a few times was a success in my book. I have a friend that owns a guide service out here and he hunted south of where i hunted and was very successful and saw lots of elk as well. Unit 48 and 49 are both pretty convenient if you don't want to camp and get a hotel in Ketchum or Hailey. You don't have to drive too far to get into good hunting. Just have to hike a lot obviously. I would go towards the end of the season...around Sept 20th or so.
Let me know if you need any more info.

Re: Idaho unit 48

Thank you very much for your reply. Is 48 a motorized restriction area? We don't have quads or motorcycles and we love to walk. When we were in Challis we would leave very early only to be passed out by motorcycles on the trail.. Frustrating to say the least. I really appreciate your help. If you don't mind i'm sure I'll have more questions coming. Thanks again, PaLuke

Re: Idaho unit 48

The north side of Warm Springs Rd all the way to the unit 48 boundary is non-motorized and everything South of Warm Springs Rd is motorized. The trail system is amazing and it is easy to cover a lot of ground in a day. Even in the motorized places I don't see hunters. It is all single track trails so you can't take 4-wheelers. Usually there are just people out trail riding on dirt bikes during the day so you won't have any competition from hunters. Plan on hiking in the dark a lot! I have a guy that will pack your animal out if you are really deep and want to save some time. I forget how much it is but might be worth it. You'll need a satellite phone to reach him and usually not a bad idea to have one anyway if you are planning on being out there for a number of days. Cell phones in most places that i hunt have no reception. I'll start scouting in June this year so feel free to check in whenever. Always happy to help.
p.s. There is a really good map that is sold in town here that helped me out a ton. Has all the single track trails with mileage for doing loops, etc. Can't remember the name of it offhand but if you are interested i'll find it and let you know how to order it, etc.

Re: Idaho unit 48

Mattic, again thank you. I would appreciate the info to get the map of the area. I don't want to seem to be a user, for lack of a better word, but when it gets closer to going maybe just a starting point to go. The only info I have for western hunts is in Wyoming for antelope. We have great luck going so if you want any info please let me know. Thank you, PaLuke

Re: Idaho unit 48

go to http://www.adventuremaps.net, select Idaho, and buy the "Sun Valley" trail map. This includes the Smoky Mtn's, which is unit 48. They are $10.99 + shipping.
As far as a starting point goes, I would suggest figuring out what areas you want to cover and then I can help. Once you get the map you'll see how many trails there are and where you can go.

Hi Mattic,
Thanks for the info on the maps. We ordered 2 of them and we should have them within a week. Thanks again and after we go over them I'll probably have some questions. PaLuke

Hello, Has anyone hunted

Hello, Has anyone hunted around Titus Lake or the Silver Creek area of unit 48? Any info would be appreciated. We've gone over the maps and talked to biologist and wardens but now need to decide a specific area. Thanks for the replies. PaLuke

I rifled hunted there back in

I rifled hunted there back in early 2000. Saw two really nice bulls and missed one of them. We hunted off deer creek road. That was my only experience with 48. I liked the area, have always heard good things about it however have never made it back up there since then. But I would like to archery hunt up there one of these years

the adventure map is a good

the adventure map is a good one.  i just got back from 3 days of mtn biking in the area.

you might look at a mtn bike for access.  quicker than foot and you can use a little trailer to pack game out.
