FWIW -- I flew in to Cold Meadows in 2007 after the big fires were mostly out. I flew McCall Aviation out of McCall and both the flight in and out was over a lot of burnt land. There were a few thin bears long on fur and short on meat. I flew out before the season actually started and swapped out my A tag. The pilots had not heard of any elk taken out at the end of Sept. I did not see any elk tracks but only hiked for 3 days about 5-6 miles from airstrip and then back each trip.
I ended up with the masses in 39. Lots of wolves. As far as I can tell the actual Elk were on the move alot more than usual. I have used only cow calls for past few years, so I can't say about pulling a bull in with anything else.
That said, I have another Middle Fork B tag this year , but may exchange it for another unit.
