Idaho Selway zone unit 17?

Looking for someone to hunt with first week in Oct. I was thinking of doing a drop camp with outfitter or If someone has pack animals I have a wall tent and all of the equipment.
I am open to any suggestions or recomendations.

Thanks, Kelly

Kelly,

Welcome to BGH. Hang in there and hopefully someone will chime in. I personally book up a year or two a head, so my hands are tied this year.

Hiker, do you have any advise on hunting the unit? I have heard that the elk have been hurt pretty bad by wolves. Would you still recommend hunting their. Could you refer an outfitter and or an area? Any info would be greatly appriciated!

Thanks, Kelly

Kelly, I have heard that the wolves have really hurt the elk in that area but really didn't know how much so I asked Serious Hunter and here is what he said ....."The Selway is a wonderful place. (I spent a summer working in there.) But I understand it has been hit VERY hard. There are likely some good outfitters ... http://www.oglb.idaho.gov/ ... If the person is really interested in ELK - go somewhere else. If the person would be satisfied with beautiful country, the Selway is that indeed."

Thanks, for your help Serious Hunter. I appreciate it.

this is what an outfitter in the frank church told me. Same general area in the big picture. The wolves have came in. The hunters have left because of the wolves. So the amount of elk is down and the amount of hunters is down. So his success ration hasn't changed. Take it for what it is worth.

We stopped going in selway because of the winter of 96\97. Also this is a 2 bear area so don't blame it all on the wolves. To me the bears and that one winter have made it harder for the game to come back.

tim, I have heard the same about the bears. They sure love elk calves.

Speaking of that, when are they going to open up a season on these "wapiti eating" Grizzlies?

hiker

there is a 2 bear season on the problem bears. the blackies. There ain't enough grizz's to worry about. Just the normal blackie doing all the damage.

I hunt parts of the frank church and I have seen elk every time. Just remember when people tell you "it has been impacted very hard” they are talking about sections of the wilderness. Frank church wilderness area is 2.4 million Acers. With the surrounding wilderness, it is over 3 million Acers. I have been scouting my spot all summer and I have seen 3 nice bulls ( 1- 6x6 , 2- 5x5’s) and Several smaller bulls. Lots of cows and I have seen wolves in the area.

A good drop camp I know of is with deadwood outfitters. You can check them out on the web. http://www.deadwoodoutfitters.com/
