Nice bull, if you don't mind which unit did you get him out of? I've been looking into planning an elk hunt to Idaho for a while and I'm looking for some pointers. As a non resident i'm looking for tags that I can actually draw not too dificult, yet still see a decent amount of animals. If possible I'd like to hunt in an area with both elk and mule deer. Any pointers would be appreciated.

I took the bull out of unit 39 (Boise River Zone). This is a public land hunt and the unit is huge. We have hunted elk in this unit for many years and we have shot some nice bulls. The issue is Wolves! We have been seeing more and more of them every year. We had a pack howling in the canyon below us while we were quartering this one up (creepy). We are starting to see larger herds and the bulls are not as vocal in the early season as they used to be. The elk are there and if one is willing to get away from the roads, the hunting is still good. We spotted this bull on October 30th and we were lucky enough to find him again about 1 mile from where we first saw him. He was sneaking into a drainage just after 1st light and the shot was 351 yards (verified by my partner's LRF). My advice (and by no means am I an expert) get up WAY early and find a good place to glass before the sky breaks light. The last four bulls I have shot and the last six we have taken were at first light.

Good Luck... Big smile
