Idaho deer hunting

Hello,
I just discovered this forum last night, there is some great info here.
I have just recently (June) moved from Wisconsin to Idaho. I was doing alot
of scouting in Unit 34, until it was closed due to the fires. I have changed
my mind and decided that I also want to hunt whitetails so I am planning on
going up to Unit 15,16 and 20 around Oct 1st to do some scouting.
If anyone has hunted any of those units I would appreciate any info you can
give me about the area. Thanks.....

To get to 15 and 16 you'll probably head on Idaho's N-S 2-lane thoroughfare to Grangeville, then either E to Elk City for 15 or N to Kooskia for 16. To get to 20 I think you'll have to approach from eastern Idaho (even though units 20 and 15 have a common border). The drive up the S F of the Clearwater River from Grangeville to Elk City (especially in the fall) is one of the most beautiful places on earth IMO. As for units 15 and 16 ... I recommend good maps and GPS. Easy to get MAJORLY turned around in that country.

Thanks Guys....
I never go anywhere out here without my GPS. Most of the research I have done on the area is through the G&F Hunt Planner website. I am fortunate
enough to have off for the whole hunting season, so I will be able to spend
alot of time looking for areas to hunt and hunting.

Looking forward to hunting Whitetails in the rut. Hope its as good as it is in
Wisconsin.

I think the deer are smaller here - but dunno. I never hunted Wisconsin. Also, the deer rut in mid-late Nov.

The rut in Wisc usually is at peak from around Nov 5th - 18th.
There is some action before and after that time period, but I have always found
those two weeks to be the best. One of the reasons I would like to target
Unit 15 to hunt is the rifle season ends on Nov 20th, so I should be able
to hunt during a portion of the rut. Looking at Unit 15 on Google Earth
it looks like there was alot of logging activity north of 14.

the south fork of the clearwater has excellent whitewater kayaking. There is a solid class v run on there. Definalty gets your attention. If you come off of there wanting more, than you are an amazing stud. i came off of there going wow, that is a serious run.
