I need Mule Deer hunters help in Colorado

This up coming year I am wanting to come to Colorado for a Mule Deer hunt. I have hunted whitetails for 15 + years and I am wanting to experience the mule deer hunting. I have numerous questions to ask and one of them is how does the application for tags work. I mean to put in do you choose from 2 or 3 areas that you want to hunt or how does it work. I will be coming to hunt public land. It will be me and a friend and we are having trouble choosing an area to hunt. I am looking for help on areas to choose from that have lots of public land and that being a non resident that we wouldnt have trouble getting into on the first year because I know in some areas you have to have a certain amount of perference points. I have been looking into area 23, 371, and 511. Also what are the set dates on the mule deer hunting usually?

derrick3783 Welcome to BGH ! As for the units you are looking at, I am of no help, but I am sure there are others that can help you out.

When you are applying, yes you put your first, second, third, and fourth choices in. With your other choices being something you can draw without a point.

Nexy are you going archery, muzzy, or rifle ?

Good luck and good hunting!

Check this web page. You can find success rates and the number of preference points needed to draw in each unit for each season.

I don't know much about the amount of public land in the areas you mentioned.

I have checked out these links and checked out the website already. The only problem is that some of it doesnt make sense. Some areas arent on there and some are. So I have emailed the state DOW to find out some more info. Do you know of any other good areas. Thank you for your help.

All the areas are on there, you just have to know what you're looking for. Unit 23 for instance, is combined with units 12,13, and 24. So the draw odds will be for DM0120oR or o3R, depending on the season. You'll need to look at a copy of the regs to know which units are combined for the tag quotas. 371 is combined with units 18,28and 37, so you'll want to look at DM018o2R or o3R. 511 is combined with 59. All the units mentioned have plenty of public land. 3rd season will reduce the hunting pressure in those units.
As for the specific draw odds:
For units 12,13,23,24: 2nd season 100% (875 tags, 761 1st choice applicants), 3rd season: 96% (400 tags)

Units 18,28,37,371: 2nd season 100% (900 tags, 597 1st choice applicants), 3rd season: 100% (715 tags, 508 applicants)

Unit 59,511: there is a float pool between 2nd and 3rd season, so you designate which season you'd prefer. Anyway: it's 69% 410 tags, 577 1st choice applicants.

First of all let me say thank you so much for your help. One question I have is when you say 875 tag 761 first choice applicaints what do you mean by that? I had no idea that they grouped these unit together. As far as you know which areas produce the best bucks. I have read that 511 is pretty good.

Also since the areas are combined when they draw do you get sent to one certain area or are you allowed free range over all of the units. Just wanting to be for sure that I get it all straight. Thank you so much

Re: I need Mule Deer hunters help in Colorado

It means there are 875 tags available and 761 put in for those tags with their first choice, leaving the remainder to be selected with 2nd, or 3rd choices if there are remaining tags. A lot of things go into producing good bucks, notably age, genetics and nutrition. But since age is the single most important factor, I measure the chance of a buck to survive hunting season in two ways: one is I divide the harvest by the total number of bucks available throughout the DAU, two is to apply deer density to just the public land, compute the number of bucks available, then assume all of the prior year's harvest was on public land. This number, that I refer to as a "public pressure index" can infer that over 100% of the available bucks are harvested yearly. Obviously that isn't likely, but it does show areas where private land hunting is probably more significant than public land.
So back to your question: which of these units might produce the best bucks? Of those units, I'd say 371, then 23, then 511.

Thank you so much. You have been a very great help. The only other question I had is when you put in for these units are you allowed to hunt all of them as a group or do they pick you one out of that group. Thank you
