I applied as well but this was only my second year so I didn't count on it really...

WMU M is probably not the best for moose - I have friends in Portsmouth, though, so I could go there for that reason alone.

I must have been at the tail end of the draw. Unit M was about 3/4 of the way down the list of preferences. Some years I didn't even put in for the lower portion of the state because the odds are lower. I decided to put unit M on the list this year because I was still planning on going to CO for elk and I could scout after work and on weekends. After I put in for the draw I got assigned a project at work that will be happening around the same time as the moose season. I hope I can work around it or it will be a "weekend only" situation and that would stink. I'm hoping if I put in the time before the hunt that I can have a few different places to go. They gave out 9 tags for M this year, up from 5 last year. That should mean that there are more moose in the area and they want to get the numbers down. Unfortunately, that means more competition in unit M. Good moose habitat is not as plentiful as up north and I'm sure that some of the other permitees will be hiring a guide. The locations of moose down here are pretty well known and I don't want to get my moose shot out from under me. That's why I need to find a few different areas with moose. I know where there should be three but those moose are well known to the locals. I'm sure the guides know about them too. The other problem is posted land. My town has conservation land that was open to hunting for years. The town closed it to hunting after too many people complained that it wasn't safe to walk the trails with hunters in the woods. It's not a very big patch. I guess I can understand not allowing firearms but it should be fine for archery. Time to get out the maps!

Great job Gregg! That is going to be a fun hunt. I can't wait to hear about it and see the photos. We didn't apply this year for NH.

Hey Jeff, how's it going? It's been a while since I've checked in on the hunting boards. Good to see you're still around here. I'm really looking forward to the hunt and the scouting. Hopefully, I can locate some other possible quarry while I tromping the woods. Should be in some good deer and bear habitat. Hopefully, I'll have a good story and some pictures to show when it's all done.

My boss invited my family over to his camp last night so I took the opportunity to drop the subject. I told him I was concerned about the season's proximity to our projected install date for the project I got assigned to. He said he thought we could work around it and to send him an e-mail for the record, so I should be good for moose season. I may be pushing it if I try for CO elk season, too. I have to talk to my hunting partner and see if he's be interested in swapping elk season for moose hunting instead. I wish I had another weeks vacation but I don't get it til next year.

Yes, still on here quite a bit. I know you have been wanting that moose tag for a long time. It is great to have an understanding boss. You can always plan a wapiti hunt, but a lower 48 moose hunt, now that's a different story.

I know a fellow who lives near your zone that may likely be willing to help you out with some good info. I'll touch base with him to see if he's agreeable and then shoot you a PM with his contact info.

He was a big help to us last year when one of my hunting friends got selected for the C-1 zone up north. He's done some moose hunting down south too.

One HUGE tip that he gave us was to request the NH Fish and Game Dept send you the Kill Sites and Harvest Reports for your zone that they compile yearly. You can request this info by calling NHF&G at 603-271-2461. Linda Verville, Wildlife Program Specialist, was the person I spoke with and she was very helpful. Ask for as many years reports as they have, and then plot the kill sites on your map. Speeds up the scouting process considerably!

Thanks a lot! I can't see the pic 'cause I'm at work but I'll check it out at home. I appreciate the contact name at F&G. There was a "magic moose map" that F&G had online a few years back that was a collection pdf's of the southern units with red circles showing moose locations. It's probably the information that you're describing. I call it the "magic moose map" because it magically disappeared. I think they took them down from the web. I have a couple of people at F&G I would like to contact to give them some proposed scouting areas. It would be nice if they could eliminate some of the areas. Of course you never really know where they might show up. I need to pick out the bigger patches of woods on a road map and then drill down on the topo's and satellite views and see what I come up with. I'm also gonna talk to the guys at the Sportsman's Club I belong to. A lot of avid hunters and some with moose experience. My wife's getting sick of hearing about moose already.
