I canceled my Ducks Unlimited Membership!!!

I canceled my DU membership today and so did many Californians, It seems they have took sides with the enviro-waco's. We are having a water war with the San francisco area liberals. DU sent a letter with the Liberals to the capital to shut down water the Central Valley of California and dry up ag lands. This is stupid on there behalf. There are thousands of farmers and farm labors who are DU members, and the land that DU is helping to dry up will cause even more unemployment and there will be no farmland for the wintering flocks to feed and nest!!! I hope somebody reads this and asks there DU chapter leaders WTF Censored is DU thinking!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :rotest1

I'm not too far behind you. I've been questioning if I want to continue my membership with DU for about a year now. A lot of my reasonings are different, but when they side with the enviro-whackos there is something wrong. I've been seeing a lot of questionable things that DU has been doing. Maybe infultration within the ranks? Who knows. I know one thing though, the Caliifornia chapter of DU will be catching hell from all it's membership. I think DU has become a bit of an elitist organization. It cares more about wealthy landowners and tends more to their needs than to the wants or needs of it greater membership - the average hunter.

DU has a singular goal, duck habitat.
They do not seem to be terribly particular as to who their truck runs over on the way to attaining their goal.
I too believe that there are times they miss the big picture.
However, being a supporter for many years and considering the huge amount of good works they do, I will not dismiss them till I am privy to both sides of the story.

There are few who have more distain for the enviro lunatics than I do, however, I will not throw the baby out with the bath water.

If they were worried about waterfowl habitat then they wouldn't of sided with the wacko's to cut off the water that grows it, Know the water goes straight into the ocean.
The DU chapter in out area was thrown out of the area. Most of the members are now in a local Cal. waterfowl Org.

I agree DU is elietist- they love their prints and banquets and doing lunch with pols. Habitat is fine BUT if we don't have guns or ammo what good does it do? it's about time they woke up and listened to the hunters among us!

I canceled my DU membership a couple of years ago. I canceled for the same reasons as you. They were getting too elitist and starting to push more for the conservation money and recognition and less for the hunting heritage. I switched to Delta Waterfowl. It is run by hunters and they are always raffling off shotguns as a fund-raiser. They are actually growing quite large as well and are doing good stuff like having free youth waterfowl hunting courses and taking youth on hunts. Check them out if you want to support the sport without supporting DU.

I too joined delta a few years ago and because of their stand (unpopular in some places) on predator control I give them money each year beyond my membership --I am happy with them and their philosophy-also i don't have to buy any prints.

Re: I canceled my Ducks Unlimited Membership!!!

I let my DU membership expire not too long after HOGETTER first posted this and I didn't renew it . I've been a bit disillusioned with them over the last few years or so. Seemed to me like the hunting heritage aspect has just become a sideline for DU lately, only promoted by DU to still appeal to hunters. All that habitat restoration that occures on private land owned by wealthy folks seems to benefit mostly the land owners and their friends who get to hunt their land and helps make all those fantastic hunts on DU TV shows possible.

I can't say that DU's efforts doesn't have a ripple effect on public land hunting, but public land would sure benefit much much more if DU would consentrate efforts on way more public lands too. The minimal efforts on public lands for waterfowl habitat restoration by my states Division of Wildlife really is a real joke. I'm sorry, but has anyone else in Colorado noticed any betterment of the State Wildlife Areas here since that $5 and $10 Habitat Stamp requirment became manditory on hunting/fishing licenses since 2006???? I sure haven't!! In fact most of the farmers and ranch owners around those SWA's throughout eastern Colorado have water rights and priority on the water in the area which often gets diverted to their land leaving many wetlands on some of those SWA's pretty dry during duck season.

But, I'll check out Delta Waterfowl for sure.

I watched DU start to cut

I watched DU start to cut their own throats back in the 80's with some of the same stunts but it was happening in Canada.  For some reason they get people in their upper levels that just don't get it at times and tick off the people that are their base support.
