hunting in the west ???

Hi Forum members.
The two of us are about to move to california and we both love our shooting here in australia.
Our parents will be moving to a mid point between Los Angeles and San Francisco
and we were wondering what the hunting is like and how far we would have to travel for it.
I think the San Benito range is the closet mountains to the area we will be living in,
the questions we have are what type of hunting is near that area and all the guys keep saying the bears and mountain lions are a big problem there ! is that true.
The only thing here that can eat us is the crocodile and they are way too far north for that to happen.
hope to get a reply as we have a lot more questions to ask

Not sure but but what town might you be moving near. I live in the middle of Cal.
Theres nothing to fear with the lions and black bears over here.
Lots of good wild boar hunting year round and blacktail deer in the fall, plenty of coyote's to take.
Lots of good quail, dove, turkey

Hi Hoggetter.
Thank you for the reply, and the area is still being decided by mum and dad.Grover Beach, San Luis Obispo are what there looking at
I spoke with my sister and she said fantastic about the lions and black bear, and also wants to know the average weight of the curlies.
And are they on public land or private property as we are not sure what the mountains are like, over here if you want to shoot you have to book the days and hold an R licence,or go the private property way to hunt.
With the black tail do you not need Tags ?? I remember reading its like a lottery over there, and when shooting most hunters take a handgun for back up ?
Once again thank you.

That area is 2 1/2 hours west of where im from, but i do know a little about the area.
There is plenty of public forest land to hunt on but there is also some private cattle ranches mixed in there.
The deer in that area is a over the counter area called the A zone and you can purchase two tags of you want.
The wild hogs are mixed in the same areas as the deer, turkeys, quail and doves.
I dont know why you would need a back up gun for unless its a pistol loaded with snake shot for the rattlesnakes which are poisonious.
If your calling the wild pigs (curlies) they are averaging 150 lbs. I've taken them anywhere from 60 - 350 lbs
You can shoot your guns on any Forest or BLM land with out a license for target practicing.
The mountains are not very high in elevation over there and it can warm and dusty.
Archery Deer season is July 10- August 1 and Rifle Deer is August 14- September 26
Wild Pig is year round and no limit, you just have to buy the tags ( $19.00 each )
