hunting unit 77 advice

I am going to be hunting in unit 77 this year. Me and a buddy are going up there for the third rifle season. He got a tag for a mule deer and unfortunately I didn't get a tag for a cow elk. I am looking at getting a bull tag when I get there but was just wondering if that is a popular place for bulls. We are going around chimney rock at the piedra river and head up in that area. Any advice or anything on mule deer or elk around here would be appreciated. Thanks Alot

I hunted the mid-late oct rifle elk season in 77 & 78 we mainly stayed around the pagosa springs area. The elk that we heard were killed were around I believe it was wolf mountain or wolf pass and turkey valley or something like that we only saw two elk tIhe whole time we were there; a spike at about four A.M. on the way into colorado, and a cow the last day we hunted.

We saw several mule deer and one great buck Thumbs up . He was in the seco valley public area. I can pm you directions to the area if you want. Mule deer seemed plentiful just not many elk in the lowe elevation b/c it was so warm.

I heard the Piedra River area is good, but you have to get into the back country. The further back you go in any unit, the better the hunting you will have. lol
