Hunting on TV????

How many hunting shows do you have access to on TV in Atlantic Canada? Barring a full service satellite dish, how many hunting shows do you have to watch? I have full service digital cable but do not have any shows to watch. Is hunting so taboo in Canada that our networks don't choose to show it? Maybe all the networks up here are run by anti. and will not show it. Have any of you guys/gals noticed this as well. TNN had shows before it switched to Spike TV and the OLN had shows before it switched to the Candian version OLNC but both have none now. Fishing shows are not even a plentiful as they used to be. This is a sad trend and can only hurt our young viewers and other potential hunters.

Now that you mention I flipped on the TV and the only thing on down here right now is a espn piece on bassmaster poos helping hurricane workers. I remember watching hunting shows for hours on saturday mornings as a kid. There are a few on every now and then but not like there used to be.

Hunting on TV????

It is sad but true. I have over 100 channels and I searched every one of them and not one single show about hunting or shooting sports. It is not hard to tell who is calling the "shots" (pardon the pun) around the TV networks.

You hit the nail on the head. There are a lot of people in high places calling the shots in many industries, not just on TV. If they're antis (anti gun and/or anti hunting) we're basically hosed. Its happening on the internet and in any public media. Look at how many newspapers no longer allow you to run ads for firearms? On the web look at how restrictive google, ebay & paypal are. Since the search engines are also controlled by California liberals, I wouldn't be surprised if at some point they don't filter out hunting & gun sites/searches. Google already does NOT allow anything firearm related to be advertised in their text google ads, even if its 100% legal. So what's next?

We all need to speak up, or we will slowly and quietly lose.

I agree Cowgal. I have written to several of the TV networks to voice my concerns. I have also sent letters to all our major book stores. You can't find a hunting magazine or reloading/firearm book up here. banghead We are slowly but surely loosing this battle against the antis. and until we start working together, the battle is lost.

We're not losing - we're forfeitting. If enough people cared to write in and complain. You know full well the antis did everytime they saw a deer being shot they'd have been screaming bloody hell. If they realized the potential market they're missing or alienating, I'm sure it will be back - afterall TSN (Canadian ESPN) found the air time to broadcast the US National Spelling Bee this spring (in prime time no less ) I think they can find the the air time.

Fortunately here in ON (at least Eastern ON, and the Ottawa Valley )hunting traditions have a stronger footing than they do around Halifax, and even the few rural NS areas I'm familiar with. Here hunting mags/books are quite easy to find in most chain book stores. Not sure about reloading - I was told that was a security issue they (Chapters) don't stock anything that could teach someone how to make a weapon - whatever Brick Wall,) eye roll However you can get it at any hunting/sporting goods store here.
We did lose Angler/Hunter TV, the Ont Federation of Anglers and Hunters TV show when A Channel bought out the Ontario-based "RO" network. That wasn't neccessarily a jab at hunters - the A Channel in general seems to be courting a more cosmopolitan demographic in general than the New RO did.

TSN is the one running the Canadian version of OLN and they have yet to put a single show on the air involving hunting and shooting. I wrote a complaint to them on several occasions and have yet to hear from them with a letter of explaination.

Chapters in Halifax have made a stand against hunting and as such they will not be putting hunting mags on the shelf. I did see a Guns and ammo a couple of months ago but nothing since.

That's a local store policy. Chapters in Kanata has one of the best stocked outdoor sections in town.

Hunting on TV????

sORRY boys, we are outnumbered....There are fewer folks out there that want to see a animal getting killed, then the hunter smiling from ear to ear, standing over the dead animal talking about how beautiful it is etc etc
I am a hunter and understand deer management...and luv those shows, Bill Jordan, The buckmaster, Mossy oak gang etc etc...been watching them since Red Fisher (a few years now) "PBS used to be OK", but I guess they would rather show bowling, poker etc....???
Sooooo since I can't find these shows on TV, I head to chapters in Dartmouth and they have loads of mags...Have a coffee and get my fix.....To me this is all in the anticipation of a fall hunt, for those that have that passion, you know what I mean...It is all part of the game, reading, dreaming, scouting, conversation, Hunting Forums... Thumbs up etc etc
More that just going in the bush and harvesting a good (and their all good) animal
Cheers for now, bring on the fall (best time of year)

Hunting on TV????

I have EXPRESVU and noticed that Global Edmonton airs a show called "Canada in the Rough" which is a Canadian-based hunting show. Never got a chance to watch it as we were on our way out when it came on, but I'll be watching for it next Sunday.

Also correction to my last - A-Channel Ottawa does still broadcast "The Angler and Hunter" which is the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters TV program. It's both fishing and hunting, biassed toward the active season (ie: mostly bass fishing in early summer, most hunting in late summer/early fall)
