hunting in southern Idaho?

My first post!

I am planning a hunting trip for my husband for next year's hunting season as a surprise. We have family in Boise, where we would be staying. I just wanted any and all info anyone can offer. Things I have quesions about... Think

1. What time of year would be best for Elk, rifle hunting?
2. How does public land hunting work? Do you just purchase a tag?
3. Any other info about best areas or where not to go would be much appreciated.

TIA!

Elk Any Weapon (rifle) varies from zone to zone. SW Idaho has controlled hunts only.

2. How does public land hunting work? Do you just purchase a tag?
Public Land is just that. Head on in follow travel restrictions or not. Just purchase a tag. Non resident tags go pretty fast.

3. Any other info about best areas or where not to go would be much appreciated.Check on Fish & Games website for harvest reports and info.

Most of Idaho's rifle hunts for Elk in the Boise area are the first week of November. Down here there are some open units that are pretty good all you have to do is buy an over the counter tag. As for draw units well, good luck the best ones are hard to draw. If your interested in a cow then you can draw. If you need any more information feel free to PM me.

Well there is a lot of public land and there is a lot of private land. Assuming you don't know anyone from around here that owns a lot of land, there are a few units that stick out to me with the most public land. Also PM me.

I can give you some of my spots I would check out because I am going to be archery hunting next year. PM me!!!!

TIA!
