hunting in the rain

this may be a stupid topic but this is only my second season going deer hunting. if it is raining outside how does it affect the deers movement? do they bed down and not go out walkin around? If anyone has any tips for hunting in the rain i would appreciate it. i am called off work tomorrow and would like to go out hunting but im wondering if im wasting my time b/c of the rain tomorrow.

Just put it this way if you're not there rain or not you're not going to see the deer anyways.

Hi Davis Big smile

We have 52 acres here and have had the pleasure of watching does raise their babies all summer. Although we didn't get much rain this year in our area, the deer were still out and about in the rain. One thing a lot of people seem to think is that they will not move in rain. People also think they don't move in the middle of the day especially if it is hot. They were all gathered in our fields this summer and we saw most of our deer between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. I'd have to either go to the Post Office early in the morning, or wait till they were ready to close, as I didn't want to leave and 'disturb the deer' LOL.

Good Luck! Hope you get a good buck!

The problem with deer and the rain is their ability to smell. Rain tends to knock their sence of smell down to a point where they are not extremely comfortable walking around much. However, some of the best time to hunt that I've found is right after the rain. They come out the woodwork. Get into your spot during the rain and wait for it to quit. You may get lucky during the rain but just wait until it clears up!! Thumbs up

Rainny days are my favorite days to be in the woods. I like to still hunt into the breeze (or a cross wind) if you move real slowly/don't make any noise you can sneek right up on them. Also a great time to do your scouting because the rain will wash your scent away too. You will never kill a buck sitting on the couch.

I took my best buck in an all-day drizzle. In more recent years I've gotten lazy so, several years ago in New York's Steuben County, I left the misery of the rainy woods for the dryness of our car while my hunting buddy braved that lousy weather and bagged an 8 pointer. Once again, to get a deer, you need to be in the woods.

Deer usually will bed more as the rain gets harder. pushing them is the best way to hunt when it rains forest floor sogs up so your foot steps are near invisible and unheard leafs dont crack. i thinks hunting in the rain is a great way to get close if not jump a bedded buck which may not have heard you due to the rain.[/b]

I have had great success in the rain. You have a few things going for you in the rain. You can move quietly, your scent is less of a factor, and the rain also hampers their vision. They will move in the rain but it is generally best to move to them.

I have always had success hunting in light rain/drizzle. As others have pointed out, you can sneak into your stand without being heard and your scent will hover closer to the ground. I have found that deer will move all day as long as it doesn't rain too hard or thunderstorm. I believe an overcast day can trick the deer into thinking it's twilight. A word to the wise, though....you won't hear them coming, so you must remain alert at all times.
