Hunting in Maine...

I was wondering if someone could answer a couple ?'s for me?, i was going through state web site, checking out laws, seasons etc. even after giong throuh it still not sure, my question is even though i'm a non-res is it possible to apply for moose tag, and any-deer tag, at the same time?. I've always stayed home-in vt- to hunt but want to try something different.
I know that same game here- white tail deer, black bear, moose(permit req.) its just someplace diff. . other ? is, do you need your(state your appling to) hunting license when requsting deer permit, or can you get license before submitting permits?--on site it stated you need license before submitting actuall permit. is it same for an any deer permit? thnks for any help.

jonesy, you do need a hunting license from the state of Maine to apply for the any deer permit. Because you have to put the hunting license number on the permit applacation to apply.

Do you know what district you are going to hunt in Maine ? If you do try to find out how many permits they are going to give out before you buy a license.
I know some areas they give out a lot. Like my area which is dis. 26 everybody that applied got a permit. So if you think for sure that you are going to get a permit it is worth buying a license.

Hope this helps some.

maineguide, thnks. i was thinking/pondering the idea of buying a hunting a hunting license and the idea of moose/antlerless permits, if picked would just be an added bonus. as far as districts goes, i'm not sure exactly. this is something new, out of state, so i figure why not try for a little more if possible, pure enjoyment, at least. If all goes well might be able to make it a yearly habbit. permits or not, just the hunting itself would be a deffinate thrill.

jonesy, your chances of getting a doe permit are batter than getting the moose permit. I know some guys that have been 20 years and still have not had one.
Good luck.

in general how is the hunting, i realize that differant parts are all differant, but harvest numbers look good, but i guess looks can be decieving, considering the size of area there being taken from. I am not all that familiar with maine so district sizes compared to actuall numbers may not br really that good. Hunting in Maine is really more like a dream, but its one im trying to make possible. thnks.

It depends on where or what you are looking for. If you want big deer with big racks here where I hunt they can be scarce. Up in northern Maine is where the big deer are but they can be far apart.

The deer count here where I live was down a bit from last year. This year I think the guy at the tagging station said that they tagged 150 deer(+or- a few).
Last year they tagged about 225.
But as a whole the state is up from last year.
Another thing to consider is that there are about 3 tagging stations within 10-20 miles of each other. I usually just check the one that is closest to me.

If I can be anymore help to you just let me know. I will try to help if I can.

maineguide, i will most deffinatly keep that in mind. there is aguy at wrk that is also liking the idea of going to maine. hopefully within the next couple of months ill know for sure if i'll be able to go,--after x-mas and taxes are/have come and gone Big smile .more taxes then any, but we all get that one. There is another guy who keeps telling me that anytime i want to go, to just say so and he'll take me, when i find out more on finances and vacation time, i ll then be checking on places to go.--the guy that's offering to take me at anytime, hunt's somewhere up around moosehead, not exactly sure though. thnks again for your insight presant and hopefully in the future.

Moosehead is a beautiful place to hunt. But there are more moose than deer up that way. Wink
But where ever you go, good luck and have fun.

yep I have to agree 100% with maineguide,he's right on the $ about his answers ;) I know theres a couple zones that give 10,000 + permits..
those zones this year a friend and I have scouted for next year and we saw a few nice bucks, but there is more small bucks and does in these areas than anything. But like Maineguide said it just all depends on what your after...just a nice deer like a big doe..you'd have no problem. But a big buck you'll have to travel and work pretty hard. But good luck to you either way Wink

a big buck would be great but not a must. even a nice doe would be worth the trip. just the experience of hunting somwhere completely differant is what i'm truly after. being able to harvest an animal is an added bonus.
