Hunting the Hard Way by Howard Hill

Miserable day here today so I went to the library and picked up this book. It is interesting reading to say the least. Fortunately, Mr. Hill didn't post the accounts of his hunts here.

Only a few chapters in, but he killed an elk with his long bow at 185 yards. Took three shots to hit it, but he killed it.

Seems to me, some posters here would have a field day with taking an 185 yard shot with a long bow.

His bow had a draw weight of 110 pounds. Can you imagine pulling it?

My recurve is only 58# and it is tough.

Has been a boring day around here, other than 3 screaming kids, but I've learned to block them out Big smile Good Idea on the book. Sounds interesting Yes

My wife wishes I was out hunting or something because she says I pace like a caged cat when I can't get out.

I actually found three good books. One on Teddy Roosevelt, one on predator calling/hunting and the Howard Hill boodk.

I've read some more of the Hill book and it is really good. You should get it and read it. I know you would enjoy it.

Thanks I'll check it out Thumbs up
I know what you mean about feeling caged. I believe tomorrow I'm going to have to find something outside to keep me busy. I'll put on an extra pair of long underwear Yes

Makwa,

No elephant story. Buffalo, bobcats, elk, tigers, marlin and others, but no elephant.

That is unimaginable to me.

But as I think about it - strikes in my mind Ghengis Khan (?) and his armies would take on their enemies at a half mile or so ... but I think they launched SALVOS of arrows at NUMEROUS targets.

hmmmmmm ...

At a caribou camp I was at a couple years ago a fellow arrowed a caribou at 120 yards. I have never seen an archer that could shoot like that guy. It was with a compound bow by a well known company and the fellow is one of their PR/Demo employees. I was flabbergasted as I am use to seeing way too many archers mess things up at just 20 or 25 yards.

I finished the book the other day and it is definitely a good read. Hill comments on the joy of hunting even when you don't harvest an animal. He often hunted for big game, but harvested small game to supply their camp with food.

Hill was a very competatve person, at least that is the impression I got from the book. Not competative in a bad sense, but just competing with whomever he was hunting with, even if it was his wife. Everyone always tried to out do him

He learned alot from hunting by hunting with Indians who he considered superior in their skills to the "white" man.
