Hunting in Eastern VA

Just moving to Norfolk area and noticed that there is just a couple of WMAs. Where the heck do you hunt around here?

I know it's a long drive for you, but Fort Pickett, Va(near Blackstone), gets alot of hunters from your area. The hunting at Pickett is nothing short of INCREDIBLE. I'd say it's Virginia's "Best Kept Secret" for big bucks. And the place is large enough so that hunters don't interfere with each other. Since they banned deer dogs 10 years or so ago, it is peaceful. And you can find virgin hardwood forests, swampland, fields, pine thickets, and the Nottoway River runs through the reservation. Military training can limit the available areas to hunt, but even if training is heavy, you can usually find a good place to hunt. NO RIFLES ALOWED. Unless things have changed, you can use slug guns or black powder rifles, but no high-power rifles. Oh, almost forgot....You have to show proof of a Hunter's Ed. class completion. If you go by their game checking station and see the pictures of all the 'monsters", you will be convinced.

If your military active or retired then you have several bases you can hunt. Thats what I do. The Dismal Swamp and Cavilier WMA are alright. Chickahominy is the largets in the area but gets alot of hunters both still and with hounds. You can always look into the many hunt clubs around the area. Many hound hunt but some still hunt as well.

Hey thanks a bunch for the advice, Bullbuster & tesoronut. I'm active AF and have spent the last five years stuck in UT hunting the mulies. Worst of all there were no turkeys, squirrels or hogs. Only two months left in korea then I'll be VA bound. How do the hunt clubs work? Is there like 50 hunters and 1 acre? Do they work on a point system for choice stands? Is there a limited number of deer tags? Again thanks for the info.

So if I had to guess I would say you were at Hill AFB, went to Osan/Kunsan with a follow on to Langley AFB.

I'm at osan and it's getting colder everyday--ready to be done with it. If we could duck hunt I would extend.

Plenty of turkeys and squirrels around here. I'm not a big fan of hunt clubs that use dogs, but that's just due to the bunch around here. As for deer tags, you should get enough to keep your freezer full when you buy your license. I,m about a 2 hour plus drive west of Va. Beach, and I can hook you up with some good still or stand hunting, turkeys and squirrels(on private land). Let me know when you can go......

Would you be an F-16 guy? I have been to Osan twice (1993 and 2003). Did you try the bass fising there?

What base will you be getting stationed at here in VA? You mentioned something about east VA and Langley AFB is just up the road. In that case you have some like 6 Navy bases, 1 AFB, and and Army base right here in the area to hunt. Plus several WMA. Many bases require a shoot quall and an indoc to hunt them. Feel free to PM me and I'll pass along the base hunting info if your interested. This is my last year as in July I'll be going to Tinker AFB in Oklahoma City.
Also keep in mind that most all hunting around here is Bow, M/l and shotgun. Only a few places can you use a rifle. Also NO SUNDAY HUNTING in VA, yes it stinks and I hope it changes.
Most of the hunt clubs do run hounds for deer on leases. usually 10-30 members depending on the size of the club. But you will find that the hound hunting thing here is a big issue amonst many.

Hey that sounds great, it's always hard moving to a new area and not spend years finding decent areas to hunt. I don't know about hunting with dogs, I'm more of a tree stand hunter or a good old drive kind of hunter. This will be a big change from hunting in UT where if you don't get a tag in the first few days for bow or gun- your butt out. I'll definatly give you a shout... Thanks

Ok I can't figure out how to PM but I can cut and paste my attemped message
I'll be getting to Langley around march time frame. I tried hunting on Hill AFB but they have like 4 tags available. Kind of sucks. But any advice for hunting the bases would be great. Nothing stinks worst then scouting someones back yard-overhunted land. I'm sure you'll be in the same position when you go to Tinker. Never been there but check out the google earth and some forums. Should get you an idea of the surrouding area. Might even have some ferral hogs that need thinning. Thanks again
