I recently spent sometime in the White Mountains of Arizona. I was actually amazed to find advertisement in a general store on a hunting contest. Basically the rules were if you are lucky enough to draw a Elk tag for the year, that you could join a contest for the region. You would earn top prizes for the biggest Bull during the different hunts for the year, basically it was divided up into rifle, muzzle loader and archery, and then also overall biggest. They even had biggest cow contest. Before I show my hand on my feelings, what does everyone else think, when it comes to contest like this? The prizes were actually some real good prizes which shocked me even more. They obviously had some real good sponsors.
They are outlawed in most states.
What is the main argument for outlawing it? I am not convinced either way yet. I would like to do research and make up my decision.
During the 60's and 70's and even into the early 80's there were retailers, sporting goods dealers, and others that were giving away money, cars, trucks, and anything else that you could think of. There were a lot of people that did not enter any of these contest but had friends that did. Well, you guess it they shot the biggest buck or bull on the mountain and let their friend enter it into the contest. This didn't happen once or twice but quite often so the states shut them down.
See, I didn't even think of that. There is one thought I had, if everyone was after a Big Bull, that would leave a lot of little ones to grow up. I have seen what you are talikng about in big fish contest at one of the local lakes. Cheaters will never prosper. Thanks for the in-sight.
I'm not a fan of hunting contest. it takes away from the sport of it. IMO

the same thing is happening at a lot of Coyote events (smaller ones) they have a entre fee of $50-$100 per 2 man team and you have to check all your dogs at a given time. I was entered in one event in NM a couple of years ago. did very well with 4 dogs the first day and 4 the second day. but the local team won with 12 dogs and 9 dogs. stay around to do some more shooting on tuesday morning in the diner heard a couple of locals talking about fleecing all the coyote hunter with (name and name) " hell they only shot 2 coyotes that weekend, every one else shot the dogs".
What people will do to win, really makes you think what type of people are in the field hunting.

Well they are the ones that have to sleep at night and live with themselves knowing they are cheating. I am a very competitive person but would never do such a thing. I appreciate everyone giving their 2 cents worth on this topic. I really am not a good writer, but would love to do a story on this subject. I am going to keep a very close watch on this contest. I have never seen one of this type in AZ.
