Hunting Colorado Unit 61

Now that I'm in my 60's I've drawn a nonresident 2nd season Elk tag for unit 61. Never been there and don't know what to expect. It will be a DIY hunt. Have killed a few bulls in over the counter areas. Any information would be appreciated. ATV access, camping, weather, herd conditions ect

MOTURK,

Welcome to BGH and congrats on the tag! Thumbs up

As for numbers you still should see quite a few elk. The access is very good and the terrain can be as easy or as hard as you would like to make it. Camping you can either camp pretty much where you want (as long as you are a 100 yrds from the road or closer) or there is one camp ground that will be packed (Divide Forks Campground) and it does not have water or electricity.

Now if it is a true giant bull you are looking for you had better start gearing up and getting in shape. They will be in the deep dark holes hiding and with the seasons being later this year I doubt if they will bugle to make it easier to locate. In typical years when 2nd season starts a week earlier you can catch them still bugling some in the early mornings or late evenings.

The weather could be doing anything. The past few years have been hot and dry on the Unc., but you never know when you are going to wake up to a foot of snow or more. I have seen several years where search and rescue has been on the Unc. saving hunters that were not prepared for deep snow and we were still out hunting and driving through it (some of the best hunting).

If you have specific questions on areas you may be thinking of send me a PM.

Quinton

Re: Hunting Colorado Unit 61

I hunted 61 1st season last year it was the best elk hunting I have ever seen! I was scouting for deer 2nd season and couldnt resist playing with the elk they were still in the same spots but were a little more weary. We even heard a few bugles 4th season waiting for the sun to come up. I will help you how ever I can. Where are you from and when are you coming out?

Moturk,I've drawn the same

Moturk,

I've drawn the same tag. I live very near the unit and plan on scouting all summer.  I'd be happy to share some info with you. I spent all day Sunday scouting an area that I was told was promising. If you haven't already done so I would order some maps. The best is "The Uncompahgre National Forest Map - Plateau Division" which shows boundaries, roads and trails.  I would also suggest getting the straight topo maps for the area as well. You can get maps by calling the Forest Service in Delta at 970-874-6600.  This is a BIG unit and you want to have some specific areas pinned down before you arrive.

Regards,

Don
