Hunting Boots

Alright. I have been out of hunting for about seven or eight years now, and a friend has gotten me back into it. I am now trying to outfit myself, but I am having a problem with finding a good pair of boots. I was looking at some Salomon Snowdogs that are rated at -10 degrees and are 100% waterproof. If anyone has some suggestions that would be great. Oh, I am going to be deer hunting in the middle of Wisconsin during November.

Thanks,
Andy

Stay away from Salomon...they're French. Just kidding. Figure what conditions are going to be when you're hunting Being from Illinois, I know winters back there are usually to-the-bone cold and wet/humid. Are you going to be sitting or walking a lot? Walking will generate more body heat and keep your blood flowing. Sitting sucks all your blood to your core to keep it warm, and your extremities get cold easier.

Another consideration is if you want insulated boots or not. Some like the insulation (good for sitting), some like to layer socks to help them control the temp. inside the boot (better for walking/hiking). Too hot, your feet sweat and you're miserable for the rest of the day. Too cold...and you're miserable for the rest of the day.

I've also been a little skeptical about temperature ratings. That's kind of like asking someone to rate pain on a scale of 1-10. One person's 8 might be another person's 4. Same with temperature. Different peoples' body temperatures work differently.

Lastly, if you live in Wisconsin, when you narrow down you list, take a day and drive to Bass Pro in Chicago or Cabelas in Prairie du Chein. Even if you can't get to one of those, go to a store with a wide variety of products and people that know their stuff. It will be worth it to talk to someone to also try on some different boots. Try on as many as you can to find the right fit.

When it comes down to it, you'll be glad you spent the time before going out in the field. Nothing can ruin a day afield like an ill-fitting, cold, wet boot. Good luck and welcome!
