Jeff,
Of course I remember that dog. That picture is my background on my computer at home! It was a female right? I remember her giving all the cats around your place a hard time every time they showed thier faces! Wish I could bring one home with me this year but, still too busy with the house. I'm hoping to be in a position to take one the year after.

Nice bears! Congrats!!

Hey TNhoundsman - How many bears do you guys get to take each year? I live in NE Alabama and would like to hunt bear. Is it possible to have a good chance at sucess without dogs or baiting? Is there alot of public access land with good hunting?

we kill anywhere from 10-20 a year. plenty of land to hunt but baiting is illegal and the terrain is not fit for stalking and bear usually move at night so stand hunting don't have good success rates. the chances are best with the dogs. it is a addrenaline rush hunting behind dogs. steve will back me on that.

So I'm assuming by the numbers you posted that there is no seasonal bag limit? How long are the seasons?? Do the dogs tree the bear or how does that work?? Forgive me for my ignorance but deer are the only big game I have ever seen hunted with dogs. With them you just try to be in the road when the game crosses and attempt your shot.

no we hunt as a group and you are only allowed one per year.
the dogs either bay or tree the bear depending on how big the bear is, most of the bear around here over 300 won't tree.

In the two days I hunted with Jeff's group last season we chased 7 or 8 bears, none treed. They were all big and kept walking or fighting with the dogs. We got close enough on 4 to get shots. Two were killed. One missed and the other just got away! If they get into the bear reserves or onto private land, the hunt is over. One of the bears we were chasing for a few hours went over the ridge into North Carolina and the hunt was called off shortly after that too.

yea that section we hunted is a really hard one to hunt due to proximity to the reserve and the state line.
