Hunter orange required for youths

BEND, Ore. – The Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission today made wearing hunter orange mandatory for youth 17 years of age and younger. The rule will take effect August 1, 2011.

The rule will require the wearing of a hunter orange upper garment OR hat for youth hunters while hunting game mammals and upland birds (except turkey) with any firearm.

The Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission also set the 2011 Oregon Big Game Regulations which include season dates, bag limits and open areas, statewide youth hunts, and other information.

There were several additions to the 2011 big game regulations including allowing the use of any legal weapon during “rifle” pronghorn, deer and elk hunts; and allow hunters who bought a Sport Pac to use the deer voucher for 600 series hunts.

Changes for 2011 include:

  • Allowing any legal weapon during “rifle” pronghorn, deer and elk hunts (already legal for other species).
  • Allowing Sport Pac hunters to use the deer voucher for 600 series hunts.
  • Allowing limited tags sales after deadlines.
  • Implementing a winter range closure at Phillip W. Schneider Wildlife Area.
  • Extend Murderers Creek-Flagtail TMA so it begins 3 days prior to archery season (currently begins 3 days prior to buck deer rifle season).
  • Replacing general late season archery cow hunts with controlled hunts in Santiam, Stott Mt, Alsea, McKenzie and N. Indigo (due to declining elk populations and to better distribute hunters).
  • Allow additional deer hunting on William Finley National Wildlife Refuge
  • New “Wendling” Travel Management Area in a portion of McKenzie Unit on private timberland (north of Hwy 126, east of Marcola Road, south of Mohawk River Mainline).
  • Bridge Creek Wildlife Area to open for public access April 15 (not May 1) to coincide with spring turkey season and opening of PW Schneider WA.

The Commission decided to continue current regulations and not allow archery hunters to use lighted nocks or cameras. It also decided not to begin a pilot program that would have allowed crossbows for some hunters with disabilities

I thought that it was

I thought that it was required for all hunters during rifle season, I learned this past spring that its optional but highly recommened, I have always worn it while hunting with my gun. They have been debating making mandatory for everyone but i guess they decided just for youth hunters and I agree with that new policy.

Why did they not require it

Why did they not require it for all hunters? It seems like hunter orange use in firearm seasons has been adopted all over the place. I guess I thought it was pretty much universal. It's good that they are finally making it required for youth hunters. Are there that many people that don't think it's a good idea to wear blaze.

not too sure

I'm not sure why they didnt make a requirement for all hunters, I personally think it should be. i think there is a fair number of people who oppose it, I'm not sure why they would. I have always wore hunter orange as well as my dad and brother, The hunters i would see in the field i would say about 80% would have some form of blaze on. whether it was a hat or a vest. I think they will make it law within 5 years for everyone. I think in the latest purposal they wanted it to be reqirement for all hunts including archery hunt. i think maybe thats where they met some resistance and adapted it for youths only.

I think all states should

I think all states should require hunters to wear hunter orange while hunting upland game and rabbits, regardless of where they are hunting. It should be required while hunting biggame on public land but I don't think you should have to wear it while hunting biggame on private land. I don't see the need when hunting land where you know who's hunting with you and you both know where the other will be located. I know this will stir the pot but that's how I feel.

It does not really stir the

It does not really stir the pot for me I guess. If you are on your own land I don't really have a problem at all with not wearing hunter orange. You just have to take the chances of a tresspasser not shooting you I guess. Boy would that be a bad day! And even though you would know where everyone was I guess there is still the chance of an accident. I am with you though.

I would just add that I do not think hunter orange should be required during archery season. I just think the chances of an archery shooting another archer is really small and being in full camo helps get within 40 yards of those critters!

agree

I agree, I dont think it should be mandatory for bow season for the very reasons you said. I dont know of any bowhunter that shoots at just sound like some rifle hunters do. I know i would not be very happy if they made it a law in oregon.

That would be pretty darn

That would be pretty darn rediculous. I know that if you decide to use a bow during any of the rifle seasons here in Colorado that you then need to use blaze orange. But I think you would have to be crazy not to. I would be nervous the whole time if I was creeping around the woods during rifle season, knowing that there were all kinds of nimrods lurking behind every bush. I wonder if there are any states that force their bowhunters to wear hunter orange. Anyone know of any?

lol

Well I'm not sure of any state that make it mandatrory for bow hunters (yet lol) Atleast in my state there are no seasons that combine rifle and bow hunts. I guess theres one. its our 600 series controlled doe hunts you can use any legal weapon. but i would throw a fit if they made me whear orange out bow hunting, that would just be silly.
