hunt pigs with pistol?

Does anybody here regularly hunt pigs with a revolver? Just curious. Anybody have advice on it?

Yes, I have hunted pigs with a Ruger single action in 45 LC, using Buffalo Bore hard cast bullets. One shot kill.

.44 Super redhawk here with Handloads...Does an awsome job out to around 50+ yards if I do my part. Never tried any further than 60.

too small?

I've got me a .357 magnum Taurus Tracker. What are the opinions on the effectiveness of this gun? I really like the Taurus Tracker and surprised myself at how accurate I was with just a little practice. I would consider getting the 44 mag version of it.

In talking with some pig guides at the recent sportmen's expo I got varying input from them. It seemed that half of them were concerned about accuracy and range while half of them said the .357 would be fine. Anyway - I'm still learning about this stuff. Heck - I'm taking my hunter safety class this weekend.

Thanks for advice.

the .357 is a fine round just make sure you adhere to not only ITS limits but yours as well. The guides were correct in the fact that it will have a more limited range than the .44 and not quite the knockum over power but it will do a good job at 30 maybe 40 yards...the 40 is pushing it a little...Go no less than a 6 inch barrel and you should be fine. I prefer the 8 inch myself on my 44. Buddy of mine had a custom .44 super with a 12 inch barrel on it...Handled like a Howitzer but damn it shot pretty groups at 75 yards!!!

If you are going to use a .357 of pigs -and it will do the job at closer ranges, I would reccommend that you buy the Buffalo Bore 195 gr hard cast load. That is my "heavy stopping load" for pigs and bears. I am not advocating hunting bears with a .357, just that if that is all I am carrying in bear country, that is my load of choice. Try Cabela's if you can not find them locally.

I use a ruger nmbh in 41 mag with a reddot. I keep my shots under 50 yds. Have only had 1 that took more than 1 shot,

I've taken pigs with both my Super Readhawk (SRH) in .454 Casull, loaded with 400 grain WFN hardcast bullets and have also taken them with my .480 Ruger SRH. I try to limit my shots to 50 yards or so as my sight just isn't that great any more. I love handgun hunting -- it forces you to get up close and personal!

I like heavy for caliber hard cast bullets.........

Hello Jack, so, you're buying a .480? That's one of my favorite handgun calibers........
