Hunt advise

I'm wanting to take a trip out west to do some wilderness hunting. My buddy and I are wanting to bow hunt for deer/elk. We are wanting to do a bivy type hunt and are willing to go where we need and to rough it. My questions are what areas/states have the best opportunity for outof state bow hunters that are gonna diy? We are also on a budget so we will need to do it on the cheap so no drop camp type stuff.

IF anyone has any advice on which directions to go I would greatly appreciate it.

Idaho is probably your best option for OTC elk and deer tags. Colorado is good for just elk, but there are some leftover archery deer tags. Here's the leftover list. The hunt codes you are looking for will start with DE(deer, either sex), the the three digit unit number, then O1A, meaning archery season.

Thanks for the reply. I will look into Idaho. Were not really set on anything although CO would be convienient cause its much closer.

What we are looking for is a high probabilty of sucess or atleast seeing some animals. We are hoping that by getting in deep we will increase our chances seeing animals and decreasing the amount of other hunters we see. Do you have any suggestions on whether we would have better luck with elk or deer and maybe a place to start narrowing down our unit selections.

Thanks for any info you can give

Your options with Idaho are still pretty good. I'll be doing what youre wanting do this September with a rifle in the Middle Fork. You might consider the Salmon Zone A tag for elk. If you wanted to go with a rifle you could hunt the Selway or Middle Fork zones starting Sept 15th with the B tag.
I'm still working on my final rankings with all the Idaho units, but just off the top of my head, I'd think the Salmon Zone is what you want. Get your tags soon because they are limited. Gonna run you about $750 for license, deer tag and elk tag.

In Utah you can hunt deer and elk simultaniously with a bow.

You have a couple of options:

1 - You can hunt elk with a spike only tag in the early rut. This will limit you to a cow or a spike but you will see lots of elk including big bulls in those units. Even though you can't shoot a big bull they are still cool to see. If you select the right unit with a spike tag you can get into a lot of deer as well. With the deer it's buck only and no antler restrictions but you alomost certainly have to draw an archery deer tag in Utah anymore to get one. They offer them in the draw and in years past not many would go in the draw and they would sell the remaining tags OTC. This year however almost all tags were gone in the draw and the remianing tags sold out 2 hours after going on sale. General elk tags are all OTC and there is not quota on archery elk tags.

2 - You can hunt elk with an any bull tag in the early rut. This is where it's hard to find areas with some decent bulls and lots of deer. There are units where you can chase some decent bulls and there are some deer around as well though.

Now the nice thing about archery hunting in Utah is that we have some "exteneded areas" meaning you can hunt deer and elk starting in August all the way into December with a bow. If you are interested in hunting in Utah let me know and I'll give you some more info.
