How much bait and how?

This will be my second year bear hunting I am hunting in an area where bear populations are rather low. NW Minnesota. I have access to all kinds of bait, How much do I put out at a time? I have lots of bread, what do I cover it with? Is a barrell the best way?, or a pit?

Check out my posting here on the bear forums. I have posted alot of pics of bears and I believe there are a couple of what my bait site looks like. I dump it on the ground cover it with logs and then dump 10 gallons of grease on top of it and smear grease up on the trees for scent. You have to be in a area with bears. They will eventually find it though. I would also recommend using a cow head hung in a tree. Drive a 2' piece of rebar threw the eye sockets and wire it about 7' up a tree. email me with any questions. supersider34@myrf.net

you need to remove the barell every night if you dont own the property in Mn aand also if you dig pit and rains all you bait is shot. Just place about a 1/2 5 gal pail of bait at the base of a tree and then cover with logs about 6 to 8 inch so only bear can et to it , other wisw wolve, coyote, etc with eat it.If you have bread, cover with fryer grease, honney, molases, etc. you can use agricultural molasses if you mix it at 5# sugar to gal of molasses.other wise it is to bitter; [/b]

Here is a pic of my site. You can see the grease stains from previous yr on the tree. The yellow is the grease in gel form as I bait in the spring. I hauled in there on this site 2 trash cans full of bread to start it off with. I check my bait site twice a week. After it gets hit I start dumping 2 55 gallon drums of meat scraps. I had 12 -13 different bears hitting my bait this yr as I had a trail cam and got the pics of them.
If you live close to the bait site and can check it every day then it is wise to use as the others say about less bait. I live 6 hrs round trip from my bait site. Here is also a friends bait site from Northern Idaho. He lives 20 minutes from his bait site and he uses the cow heads then a 5 gallon bucket of donuts and a 5 gallon bucket of straight grease. he kills 3-4 bears off this bait site every season and we have 2 season here in Idaho. His friends and family take one every season on this his site.
Oh yeah one other thing and this is for everyone. if you are worried about foxes and coyotes getting into your bait here is some help. I piss on my bait site and my son does also. Thats his favorite thing to do when we go up. The bears don't care but the human scent keep the scavengers off except birds.
But the first pic is my bait site and the second John's

Thanks for all the reply's. This is my second year baiting, last year i got bears to hit my site so I must be doing some things right. I have about 200lbs of doughnuts and all kinds of goodies in the garage right now waiting to go out in two weeks. (thats when we can start baiting). Do trail camara's scare off bears?

To be honest with you I really dont know. i would think it would at first and make them feed at night but as they have more bears feeding then you will have them coming in different times to compete for the bait. I got alot of night pics at first then came the day time pics. If you use it put it high in the tree as I had bears swat both my cameras that where on the site.
Good luck and post some pics.

So i did go out to the feed store and got some feed molasis (or how ever your suppose to spell it), I 4 cans of choc. fudge, 70lbs of gummie bears, 30lbs of candy corn, 50 lbs of black licorish, 10lbs of marshmalow cream, 100lbs of dounughts, and a 5 gallon pale of candy hearts. I think I am set go go! I am so excited to get started. I think im more into bear hunting than anything. My girlfriend gets a little upset at me sometimes when I am out looking for bait (Your looking for bear bait again!!!!) But its all in good fun. Now i have to go out and get some pales full of grease!

Might give them a sweet tooth.LOL Alot of sweets there. Make sure you put out something to attract them. I would do some meat of the cow head. They are used to the rotten meat smell. Just my opinion though. But if you got them in last year with this. Cool you are good to go.
Bear are my favorite also. Alot of work but is great seeing them coming in.

so the feed molasis i got from the feed store, you thought that i might need to mix it with sugar because it is too bitter, that seems like a lot of work, if im just using it to cover bread with is it ok to use stright, or do i need to for sure mix it with sugar?
