How many rounds a year

Hi everybody,

I'm kinda new in the hunting business, and I'm trying to figure out how many rounds does the average hunter buy a year. Any ideas? How much ammo do you guys buy each year for hunting?

Rounds per year

Isn't this the same question that you posted on the Rocky Mountain Forum?  You know, we do have whitetails in the Rocky Mountain states.

I know that most hunters don't, but I would recommend that for every bullet that a hunter shoots at a deer (or other big game animal) he/she should have previously shot twenty bullets in practice.

By practice, I don't mean sighting in shots on a bench, but shooting from field positions (offhand, sitting, prone, off sticks) at targets at the ranges that you would expect to shoot at the game animals.

Yeah, Thanks man, though I'd

Yeah, Thanks man, though I'd get me some opinions. Sounds like good advice!

I agree that you should shoot

I agree that you should shoot a lot more at practiace than while actually hunting.  If I stuck to just what I used hunting I would only shoot 2 or 3 rounds a year but that is not near enough to keep you in shape to be able to hit those hard targets when you don't have any other shot.

Listen to Critter. I could not agree more.

I shoot atleast six just to make sure scope is still zero. Then I gotta try a few "trick" shots

My opinion is that you should never shoot at game unless you are 100% confident that you can make that shot at that distance from that position. So what do you need to do to know that? SHOOT - a lot. You hav eno business hunting unless you have put hundreds of shots into a target at each distance that you might shoot at. I mean that you should shoot hundreds of shots at targets at 50 yards, hundrds at 75 yards, hundreds at 100 yards, hundreds at 125 yards, etc. - out to the distance where you decide that you will not shoot at. There was a time when I would buy thousands of cartridges a year. I no longer do that. Instead I reload my own. The price of ammunition has gone stupid. It is much more cost effective to load your own.
