how do you feel about CCW's?

I don't believe anyone should get a CCW permit "just because the law says you can" anymore than I believe you should get a drivers license just because the law says you can. You get a drivers license because you want to drive. Personally, I got a CCW permit because I wanted to be able to protect myself and family in that way if ever needed. Here in Oklahoma - CCW laws have been great and my hope is that one day all states will have good CCW laws.

A man from Oklahoma licensed to carry a concealed weapon successfully defended himself from a robber here in KS. We have reciprocal laws so he could carry here too and he used his gun to fend off a robber at a gas station.

well crime goes down and people are safe. i live in pa and wouldnt consider not haveing my ccw. as others have said the people who want to keep us from carrying are the same ones who let us fight and die for them to have the right to speak their oppinions. criminals will always have guns to commit crimes and any type of restriction is a bad idea just ask the citizens of Austrailia where crime went up 300% after they lost their rights.

I spoke to an old friend yesterday. She used to be 100% anti-gun so I was expecting/baiting a fight when I told her I got a CCW license.

Her response floored me. She said she could understand why I would want one. She went on to say it would be a great world if all guns were gone, but that isn't going to happen. Criminals are going to have guns so we might as well be able to protect ourselves with guns too.

I couldn't believe it. This is the argument that I had been making with her for years before giving up. I think seeing the crime around her made her change her mind.

One of the interesting things to me is that the anti-gun types just LOVE to use the old "if it saves one life" argument to justify gun bans. But try to turn that around on them, and show how a gun in the hands of a law-abiding citizen can save one life and all of a sudden they're all "but studies that compare Seattle to Vancouver have proven..."

There are lots of people who need to carry. Some carry a lot of cash, some have been threatened by abusive relatives, some just frequent dangerous areas. But as others have said, the possibility the someone MIGHT be carrying makes criminals less likely to rob or carjack. The CCW people are your friends, even if they never have to pull a gun.

I live in a suburban area where the cops busting kids with beer is a big night. But I want the option to carry if my circumstances change.

It comes down to this, a criminal will not care if he would get into trouble for carrying a gun, chances are if he gets busted for that he was doing something like robbying a 7-11 to get caught in the first place. The crimes are for the most part not comitted by gun law obiding citezens, so why should we not alow them to carry guns becasue a group or people that do not abid by the law and will break the law either way. Yes there are many people who should not be carrying guns and yes there are places where guns should not be carryed but the fact is the majority of gun owners and gun carryrs practice better gun safty then is required by law. I believe in switzerland, could be mistaken on the country , every male when they turn 18 must serve in the millitary and keep thier rifle, this lowered there crime rate and now almost all there crimes are by forgen visiters. i am not saying every one should own a gun but i would think twice before robing some one if i knew they were trained in self defence with a wepone. I my self am a hunter and have a few guns in the house and i have friends say that they would think twice about robbing my house by the big truck and other signs at the house of a hunter cause they know i have wepons and know how to use them. In closing CCW has not caused crime rates to go up and there is strict restrictiions so i think it should be left up to each individual to decide.

don't want to catch flak or ruffle any feathers, but i'd like to hear people's opinions on carrying concealed weapons. i'm sure i'll be the minority in here, but i think CCW's should be restricted to law enforcement and military personnel, with some exceptions. sidearms carried for hunting/sporting reasons being an exception, or carried by persons with high risk or high profile jobs being another.

i read and hear some of the things people say and ask regarding CCW's and shake my head. for instance, on a post earlier somebody wrote something to the effect of "our state just passed a CCW law. never thought about carrying before, what would you suggest?"

why in the world would you even consider carrying a concealed weapon just because the law says you can? i think the two problems are that people don't consider the liability associated with carrying a firearm, and that people don't have the necessary training or good judgement to use that firearm effectively or responsibly. besides, chances are that you are never going to be in a situation where you have to use a firearm. and if you are in that situation, take good mental notes and be a great witness for the cops.

there is no end to this debate, and people will always say "i'd rather have a gun and not need it then need it and not have it." and there are a lot of people outside of the law enforcement/military scope that i would completely trust to carry concealed and be responsible and use excellent judgement. but speaking in general, i think CCW's should be restricted to a very small portion of the population.

just my two cents... would love to hear yours.

You are wrong, bottom line. So everyone should not carry just because you personally don't see a need to carry, maybe one day when you got a gun shoved in your face or a loved one gets assaulted by someone and you just stand there looking and wondering what can I do.
Then maybe, you will have a different opinion on it. But let me tell you, I am not going to wait tell it's too late. I have been carrying for over 20 years now, and never had to even touch my carry gun, but if that day comes, I won't be a victim of some punk.

You are entitled to your opinion, even if it is wrong.

Remember this, the cops are only minutes away, when seconds count. Think

Hey Jeff. Are you asking how we feel or how we think? I think and feel that any law abiding citizen should have the right to carry a concealed weapon for protection without having to obtain any government endorsed permission. Every state weapons law should be like Vermont's where you don't need permission to carry concealed. Like redhawk1 stated....cops are minutes away when seconds count. Murders and killings can happen in under a second. Cops are there to show up, investigate, and take reports.

I also want to stress that one of the most important aspects of conceal carry is the word "CONCEAL". That means not only physically concealed, but verbally concealed. Yeah, that's right, when you carry a weapon, keep your mouth shut about it, don't even hint about it. I know two guys who got their CCW and the first thing they did way before they were even issued it was brag and tell everyone they know about it. Then when they got it, more bragging and talking. Pure stupidity!!! The less people that know, the better off and safer you'll be. You know why? Because when anyone looking to commit a crime gets wind that you are a weapons carrier, that makes you the first target to take out when they decide to act on their crime.

Just some advise to you Jefflb916. Don't expect anyone, not even cops or military to protect your life or the lives of your loved ones. That responsibilty is yours alone. Cops have no legal requirement to save your life and can't be held legally responsible if you are killed under their watch. If you truely believe that your life or that of your loved ones is in danger of being taken, then you must do what you have to do to protect life. That is your God given right. Remember that.
