How did your hunt turn out this year?

I understand during deer season one doesn't want to sit in front of a computer screen and chat on forums. But deer season here in KS is winding down. Anyone have any good pic's of their bagged game, or any good stories? It was a tough year this year so any pictures or sucess stories, for those of us who were frustrated, would be great!! Whacha' got??!!!!

Humpin Buck where you been hiding? Didn't know we had another Kansan around here. Good to hear from ya Big smile What parts are you from?
You're right, the season was pretty slow around here. I got a doe for the freezer and am going to try a couple more times for a good buck. Did not see a single shooter buck from stand this year (close to 75 - 100 hrs. on stand) very unusual. Have cam pics of some great bucks so it's not like there are no deer in the area, some strange phenomenon I guess eye roll How has your season gone?

I got a small button buck with the bow (thought it was a doe) and a nice big fat doe with the rifle, but no buck. I passed on numerous small bucks.

I might go out this Saturday, but that will most likely be the last time this year with the bow. I am getting a new rifle soon so I might go out in January for the special doe season and thump one with the new rifle.

I'm in Manhattan. Sounds like you and I had about the same type of season. I KNOW there are big deer in the area. They just never showed themselves. I'm pretty sure the abnormally warm weather for the majority of the season kept them bucks a movin' at night. What do ya do though!?!?!?!!

I ended up getting an 8 point. Nothing to speak about, but I'm hunting on private family ground around Alma, KS and this was a managment buck. There are bigger ones there, I just never got close to one. I want the bigger ones breeding the does not this one. He had descent tine length, just no mass, and main beams were growing around and nearly touched each other. I took him out of the gene pool. I'll probably go out and try to put a doe on the ground in Jan. It won't kill me if I don't make it out though. I'm playin' it by ear at this point.

Where you guys located?

Jayhawk Land here lol I'm about 10 miles North of Lawrence and do most of my hunting around Holton on my family's farm land. I did manage to get a doe for the freezer and like you I might get back out in Jan. for another. I might possibly get out this weekend for the last part of bow season Think

Lawrence huh?!!! I won't hold that against you!! Kidding.... Good luck with the Bow hunting. I used to do quite a bit of archery, but the whole "wife and kids" thing kinda put a damper on the time required to do that. I wouldn't trade it for anything though. When they get a little older, I'll take it back up. I love being out and watching it all happen....ya know?!!

Couple buddies of mine went out yesterday for doe season and saw quite a few. The snow and cold weather is great, it's just a little too late!! They saw quite a few does and (of course) saw a lot of bucks. HA!! Aint' that the always the way it goes!!

I don't know if I'll make it out at all for doe season. I've never been really intrested in waterfowl hunting, but a buddy of mine invited me to go along.....I had a blast!! So now I'm kinda hooked on that!! Duck is over, but goose goes till 2/18/07 so I'm gonna be spending some time (and it sounds like a lot of $$ too!!) getting more involved in that for the rest of the year. It's kinda like turkey hunting in a way. The way you decoy, and the way you talk/call either makes or breaks the deal. There is a little calling and decoying with deer hunting, but the majority of it is being in the right place at the right time. The communication with the animals really intreagues me. I'm in the market for any used decoys, or hunting tips for waterfowling too!! Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Take care!!!

Never been duck hunting. One of those things I know if I try I know I'll be hooked. I'm kind of like you, kids and family take alot of time. Luckily I'm able to get out with the bow. Certainly don't need to add anything else now lol Started picking up squirell and rabbit hunting again, oldest son(7) likes to get out so thought that would be good way to get him started. + started coyote calling this year! Lots of Fun!
Good Luck! Keep us posted Thumbs up

I want to go coyote hunting. I have a hunting buddy who has done and we are suppose to get together and do some. I will be getting a new rifle any day that I think will be perfect for it. It is a Remington heavy barrel .243.

I have done a little coyote calling.....MAN, WHAT A RUSH!!! I haven't made it out yet this year. I was thinking the weather was entirely too warm to be calling, but I've talked to several other people in the area and they said they are doing very well. That surprises me. I usuall wait untill it has been bitter cold for a week or so. Ya know, let 'em get REALLY hungry and desparate for food. Of course....around here in KS, if you wait on the perfect weather you'll NEVER get it!!! I guess I should get out and partake whenever time allows!!

By the way CVC, .243 is a great KS all purpose gun. More than enough power for the coyotes, and good gun for deer too. Some folks think it isn't big enough for deer, but I don't have any problems with mine. Shot placment, shot placment, shot placment!!! You can definately wound deer with the .243 if your out there just "slingin' lead"...take some time and sight that bad-boy in and it is deadly!! I've shot my .243 since I was a kid and love it!! You will too.

Had a neighbor that was going to take me crow hunting. Said it was a blast, but he moved away not long ago and don't know where he went
Been debating between the 223 and 243. for coyote. Really want the 223 setup, but my son will be hunting in the near future and think the 243 would allow us to do both. Maybe I'll just get both Big smile
