is it possible to make a homemade moose call?
Yes you can make your own.
Get a metal coffee can, 2 or 3lb will work and a wide shoelace. Punch a small hole in the bottom of the can and thread the shoelace into the hole and knot it on both ends so it can't be pulled through the hole. Then add enough water into the can to soak the lace, wipe off excess water, put the can under your arm, and with the lace between your thumb and first finger stroke the string.
You will hear the sound and you can put duct tape on the can to take the tin sound out if you choose.
Try long strokes and short strokes to make the cow and/or bull sound, try stroking the string from different points or different speeds to change sound. The lace has to be kept moist for optimal results.
It's very easy and inexpensive and it will work.... ![]()
You can also try different kinds of cans to get the sound you want.
Good Luck & Have Fun
I had posted almost this exact thing in the tip section last year some time. I was amazed when my grandfather did it one time. Very cool to see.
thanks! ill try that
more ideas?
All the moose callers I know don't use calls, they just use their voice and hands or perhaps a megaphone of rolled birchbark to direct/amplify the call to cover more distance. I know the old coffee cans definitely are popular, and do reproduce a moose-like sound...
If you are interested I'll sell you a "moose call" trumpet I bought - really cheap! ($1 plus shipping?)
It is basicall a plastic funnel. But when I watched the "moose talk" video that came with it, the guy on the video just called with his cupped hands and voice. A tag at the end obviosly was filmed later plugging the plastic trumpet, but I thought the call without the trumpet sounded better and just called with my voice when I took my moose.

No, that wont work , im swedish
I've done an awful lot of hunting, and guiding, for moose. I do use a fiberglass call to improve my volume, and tone. I also call with my hands a lot, I guess it depends on the situation when the bull is coming in. The other nice thing about that fiberglass call is that it gives me something to rake the brush with, and the sound it produces is almost exactly like that of a bull thrashing trees and brush when he's all fired up. I bought it out of Manitoba (I think), and I bought the magnum model. I had to cut off the end so that it would fit my mouth correctly, as the hole on the caller's end is pretty small as it comes from the store. I have used birchbark calls a lot, but someone invariably sits on it, and they get crushed or broken. Happy calling, gents!!
I made a can call but I found using my voice was as good or better. I made a birch bark megaphone also that gives more volume than just using cupped hands. One of the guys that shot one near our spot used a can call. They don't seem to be very picky.
