to high for grouse?

i was grouse hunting around the lake wenatchee area, at about 2500 to 3500 ft elevation, and didn't see a one! two hunters, with a good dog, and we didn't scare up one. lotsa furry critters, but no grouse.
as we drove back around the lake, we saw two covey's buy the road (after hunting hours) and to top things off almost hit a muley doe!! jumped out on the highway like she was suicidal.
so the question i have is do grouse hold at lower elevations? or does elevation matter?

Here's a link that might give you the info you require:

http://wildlife.state.co.us/NewsMedia/OutdoorsJournal/DuskyGrouse.htm

In part the article says:They typically move to ridgetops between 9,000 and 11,000 feet, where they feed on a variety of leaves and berries found in grassy meadows or under Engelman spruce and subalpine fir stands.

Hope it help ya Thumbs up

Haven't grouse hunted since I left Alaska, to long. But up in Montana when we got high what we found were "Blue Grouse". They get about the size of a small chicken but are lots better eating. Down low we found "Franklins" and "Ruff's". Early season low grouse were usually fairly close to water but as rain came, they spred out.

Almost any grouse eats better than chicken. I'm not to high on those "Spruce Grouse" in Alaska tho. You can live on them but they taste like s........bad!

I have shot 11 grouse since the opener, all at 4000 to 5500 feet, all Blues. Hunt the south and west facing slopes and ridges. Grouse are dusting themselves in the powder after they eat first thing in the morning. Later you will find them bedded under the pines and elderberry bushes. Shop for elderberry bushes. They will gorge themselves on elderberries and maple tree seeds, and ants this time of year. Also a bit of greens. Ridges in the early am, mid hill at noon. Good luck.

Remember, these are ground dwellers, walking around all day like Turkey, until spooked. Look low.
