High buck hunt

Anybody ever hunt the early hunt here in Wa? We hunted it last year for the first time. We went 2 for 4 with a 5X5 and a 4X5. We did see a few other legal bucks but nothing any bigger than the blacktails we always hunt. We backpack in so it is a little tougher then using horses but we don't have to take care of the horses while we should be hunting. I am just getting ready for the snow to melt so I can do some more scouting. DT

i have done it once before. 3 years ago. We went in off Lake Chelan. ( mile hike in. Shot 1 5x5 with eye guards. Great hunt, but a heck of alot of work. We went 2 for 2 and seen several legals also. I may do it again this year, but I have a great private whitetail spot. 2500 acres of farm land, the only hunter, so its hard to hunt elsewhere with so many deer in my spot. Thats why i have not gone back to the hills in 2 years

I'm new to this site, and don't know if anyone is still watching, but i have been doing some scouting around the spada lake area off HWY 2. Anyone been up there? Had any luck? I have my bear tag, and have friends that have seen some up there hiking, but I have yet to find one. Any help, tips would be great.

Had a lot of fun hunting in Buckhorn wilderness last season. Never got anything but sometimes thats ok. Went into Silver lake one weekend and up the Dungeness to Camp Hardy another.

Did have a forked horn walk thru my yard 3 days after the season closed though. He mocked me by standing broadside about 20 yards away, not seeming to care in the slightest. neener!

Some years back I went on a high country, back woods hunt for the "illusive" Blacktail. By the time I got to where I wanted to hunt I was about 20 miles in. Way to far to take an animal out. When there are no horses.
I saw plenty of deer. Some very nice shootable one too.
I ended up doing some hiking, camping and hand feeding some doe's my trail mix. I had deer drinking out of the same stream that I was using for my water. They do not have any fear of hunters and illusive, they are not. When you get that far in.
It was a great trip.

I have not done those trip's but it sounds to me like an ideal time and place to catty a good camera and leave the rifle home. You can shoot them all that way and have every one hangng on the wall if you want. Just take a good camrea and a copule good lenses.

Here's an elk that didn't get away and yet he did,,,,we both won!

I don't care what kind of shape you get into, pack out an elk 20 mi and you'll never do the second one! Either that or you'll invest in horses!
