Help Guys!

Hi Guys

I need an advice ..

I've been hunting black bears for soo long now, not to mention the many guiding trips for friends and relatives, during my many years hunting i never shot cubs, i've seen sooooooo many but never wanted to shoot one ( maybe not interested or soft hearted toward cubs ), so anyway a freind of mine called me yesterday and told me that he saw 2 cubs that been recently kicked out by their mother and still hanging out together and he asked if i don't mind helping him find them and do the job for him because he is not a hunter , but for many years he wanted a bear so bad to display in his living room but don't know how, he is also interested in the meat !
the cubs he described are in the 100 + lbs , so i am thinking close to 2 years old and this winter would be their first winter without the protection of their mother ..
He gave me the location of the 2 cubs, so if i go there it will be a matter of time until i find them and.... I will post pictures if i go.
call me a wimp or anything u want, i just don't like shooting cubs.. so ur input will help !

I have very limited black bear hunting, and 0 success. however, with animals I do hutn often & successfully, I use the same rules, no babies. However, I would say that these bears, due to the actions of their mothers, no longer need to be considered cubs. I would say that they have graduated to sub-adults. I prolly would for my first bear, much like a 2 year old 2 or 3 point mulie for my first deer. Gotta start somewhere.

I would not advise YOU to, though. If you are asking a questioin like this, based on your history, you already know the answer. Most of the time when we ask these kind of questions, we want someone to rationalize a choice we wouldnt make ourselves, making it ok somehow. Then, it is usually ok only for a time, turning into regret later. If it is going to be something you regret, dont do it. Hunting is to precious a gift to harbor regrets about.

I would have to agree with BigCallin here," you know the answer". You do not want to go shoot a cub! If you have the time and this person is a good friend tell him you will try to get him an adult bear. Let the cubs grow up. If they are a nusance or are posing a danger to someone that would be a different story but it sound like he just wants a skin and some meat.

Iknow I couldn't and wouldn't do it. Even orphaned cubs survive their first winter. That rate in studies done around here suggest as high as 80 percent survivability. So, 2 yr olds would easily go it alone.
In this case, you may well have regrets shooting these animal for I'm not quite sure what reason. Was it for the food or the mount or because the guy thought they wouldn't survive the winter? I hunt for the cameraderie in the camp and always view the taking of an animal as bonus. I know this. It sickened me to have to shoot nuisance bears while I was working. It was always such a waste. And it always bothered me to destroy moose, bear and deer that were hit by trains or vehicles or injured in some fashion. Ultimately, this will be about how you feel towards your future as a hunter, its not about helping someone else out.

I have to agree with the other gentleman......it doesn't make sense to me - what is there about these two cubs (other than your friend may know there approximate where abouts) that he is saying that he really wants a rug and maybe some meat.....first, the meat off the cub will not be as great as off a much larger/older bear and second, the rug will not be as great as that off a much larger/older bear. I would think a good answer would be: Since you aren' t a hunter, I would love to help you get that rug and meat that you have always wanted....let's let these cubs grow a few more years and get much bigger, now that we know the area they're in we can hunt them in a few years, if you want to get one this year, you and I can set up a hunt and go out and I'll get you a rug to be proud of!
Sounds to me like you should listen to your conscience.
