help with first time bear hunt

I live in northern Idaho panhandle. Would like to know what is the best bait for spring bear and also how long should i pre-bait the site. I have heard that cooking honey on site is effective. Any ideas? Meat, fruit, popcorn, have heard even dogfood for bait...?
Also, with calling bears, is it better to call in the spring rather than fall? If so is a fawn in distress the best?
Thanks for any and all info!

Spring calling works great. I have called in a few on the westside since we have gotten the spring hunts.

This one was 380 lbs field dressed.

BBD - I used to use a Burnham Bros. C-3 Long Range , but now I make my own. I have a certain sound that makes me feel confident and I found that I could purchase 3 calls and they would all sound different. Now I purchase the reeds in bulk and tune them until they create the tone I want. I will also use cow/calf/fawn distress sounds (they work great). I will cold call for as long as two hours, but have had bears pop up as soon as the first note was out to as long as four hours. I have called them in at all times of the day.

Ridge Runner - they are out and about here on the coast!

Nice bear BTKR what sound is that you are tuning too I use a knight and hale distress but it makes all kinds of distresses rabbit fawn and yote I havent needed to try it yet but this year Im going to no matter what. Baiting seems to do the job every year.

Rabbit and fawn distress work real well for me.

Here is a link to an article I wrote for another site on calling bears.
