Help with Colorado

Well I wasn't luck enough to draw in NM this year so me and my cousin want to go to CO. I've picked 6 different units I'm interested in but will try any where. The units are 128,861,691,86,82, and 85 can any one tell me if those units are any good or worth trying. We will be hunting with archery equipment so another thing first part of season or last better and on eather sex tags are spikes legal? Any help is much appreciated.
Thanks in advance
Matt

Colorado elk hunting

rowdy,

I wish I could help with the units you are looking at, but I have no knowledge of those.

As far as when to go, I have had great luck at both times, but I would prefer the later part of the season.

Good luck up there Matt. I'll

Good luck up there Matt. I'll be putting in for a Colorado muzzleloader tag next year. You're welcome to come up there with me then if I get drawn.

Rowdy, The only area you

Rowdy, The only area you mentioned that a spike bull would be legal would be in unit 128. All the other areas the bulls must have 4 points on one side or a brow tine of at least 5 inches. See page 28 in the regs book. I can help you a little bit with some of the units but cannot give you any real hard info. Unit 128, overall not a good elk area. Yes there are elk but unless you really know the area you would be better off going someplace else. Lots of private land and the weather will be HOT that time of year. Cannot tell you much about units 82, 85 or 861 however these units have decent elk herds in some of the areas. I would look into the area just north of Great Sand Dunes and north of Crestone in unit 82. Not much for elk in 861 so would not waste time there, unit 85 can be good west of Aguilar and in the La Veta Pass area but don't know any specifics. Unit 691 holds some elk but LOTS of private property and again would seek other units. Unit 86 holds fair elk and decent public land but in very steep for the most part and the unit is probably 50% private lands also. As for better times to hunt, sorry really cannot help you on that. I love the rush of opening day but understand the last 2 weeks and be better hunting and the weather night be a bit cooler. Drop me a PM if you have and more questions. I know this is not a ton of info but hope it helps somewhat.
