ive hunted whitetail for a quite awhile, but never really got into black bear unil recently, im using a browning A bolt 2 in 7 mm mag, shooting federal 175gr trophy bond bear claw... (grouping 3 at 1/4" @ 100yd) is this going to be shell enough to do what it needs to? or is there something else i should try?..here in vermont we cannot bait bears, so what would be a good suggestion for differnt calls, if any..

Hey, from accross the river Jonesy. I am not a real expert at this but I believe that your 7mm Rem Mag will be more than enough for your black bear. I have been going out with 8mm Mauser, 7.5 French, and 7.62 x 54 Russian. Yes I like to hunt with my C&R rifles, but these aint Grizzlies either. Good luck .

I have not hunted black bear but have been around them and been told repeatedly that a 7mm is sufficient.

I think most predator calls should work, but the critical thing is to setup in an area that shows fresh bear sign so the bear is possibly in range when you start squalling away. If there is no sign, then you could be tooting your horn for quite a while with no results.

The .308, 30-06, 7mm are all excellent for hunting bears. I have seen bears not drop a bit of blood or leave no hair on it's exit - a fat bear especially will close up around the wound right after being hit. Make sure you have a load to do the damage necessary to shorten the time you look for the bear.

I do alot of Bearhunting the other side of Lake C. from you. Like anything it is more in shot placement and the bigger the gun the more room for error you have. The 7mm is plenty of gun, myself I would be shooting a 180+ gn nosler partition or bonded Bear Claw Bullet.
I hunt them in natural food plots (soft mass; ie cherries, rasberries, service berries, early season, sept/oct. Hard mass; in the adks beechnuts late)since we cannot bait. I have never hunted with calls.

I shot my first bear with a Savage 7mm Mag. The bear went 50 yards and piled up.
I shot my bear this year w/ a 30-06 and the big guy dropped right in his tracks.
